What I did on mine today

Apparently I forgot to do some stuff.  I thought I was almost ready to cut and weld but I forgot to foil tape and my strips aren't right.  But that's ok.  I'm learning.  I just have to remember stuff.  I didn't rush at all but I'm still too new at this.  A bit discouraging but on the bright side, it was another day in the garage.    IMG_5801.JPGIMG_5806.JPG

It's strips of metal he is using to fill the corners of his Track T wood buck so he can take a flexible pattern from.

Jim: Keep plugging away until it's dead on. The panel you make will thank you.
Just keep in mind that making the panel is the quick part. Get the buck and pattern correct and the panels will be done the first time (hopefully)
without having to toss any in the bin.

That's the part I like best - making it myself. But I think I better wait for the class to see hands on so I get it right.

No waiting. It's only metal. Start practicing. Toss a few bits in the trash, move on.
You'll need the practice anyways before you end up with a piece that's "hot rod worthy".

Get some new strips taped to your buck, post a pic every bit of progress, and we'll walk you thru it.
You have two months for this, so let's get thru it slowly but surely.

I'll have to go back to the metal shaping site and see if I can get the images this time. I can't get any further without some images for a better idea of what to do next. I know I have to start the metal strips over and then add the foil tape but I'm still not clear about what's wrong with the one I made. The one corner is too much of a 'corner' and should be more rounded I guess. I'll try to find the images. Thank you 123Pugsy.

Remember I showed you how I had to cut out a huge piece of the front of my car. My pattern and buck were not exact. The metal I made matched the pattern, which was not right, exactly. If you do a pattern and buck which are not precise, you will have metal which is not precise. They need to be dead on. Just passing on the lessons learned from my huge mistake which took a whack of hours to fix. TAKE YOUR TIME NOW, will save it later. There are no shortcuts.

BTW, you could fill the corners with Styrofoam and file it into shape.

Oh yeah, Styrofoam would work. I calculated the grill portion and made a cardboard version and tacked it to the buck. That helped me see where the 'corners' were too defined. Back to the buck I go.
