Hi guys, just plated my 56 F-100 today and I asked if I could get car plates (thought I had seen others with them) anyways the guy told me it's a truck so it gets truck plates?
These would be commercial plates, why can't I just get car plates, anyone else have car plates on their vintage pickups?
good question, don't know. what do they put on a new 150, car or truck? i'm guessing they should be the same maybe depending on how it is registered, personal or company. blue lettering on plate is car and black lettering is truck but my 1950 f-1 is a Y.O.M. black plate with white letters. interesting.

That's a truck so it gets truck plates, simple. With either car or truck plates you still have to run both front and rear plates, stickers on front plates on trucks, rear on car.
It depends alot on the "SERVICE ONTARIO" you go to. I went from comm. plate to historic plate (didn't like the restrictions) and ended up with car plates. TMJ

I kind of figured that, I was not completely certain as I have seen car plates on some of the vintage trucks like tumuchjunk has said he was given car plates.
pernaps tHe YOM plates did not destinguish between truck/car?
i will learn to live with it, at least the black letters match the paint LOL

not that i am aware of they don't. you find the plates and check to see if it can be registered preferably before you pay to buy it, lol. i found a guy with a bunch of old plates in pairs and wrote down the numbers and checked with the mto on what ones could be registered. of the 5 numbers i checked 2 were usable.
it is a whole other process to put them on the vehicle.

i guess i better snoop this out before it's to late. i put the sticker on the back plate as for a car and maybe it should be on the front plate for truck, ? i know the plates i took off were blue. ?

V2 - If you're thinking about YOM plates - I just got a set for my 29 roadster.
I bought plates through a guy that has a small business selling YOM plates. He verifies the number ahead of time to make sure it's available to be registered still. And also has a good idea of the condition that is going to be acceptable. You can find a matching pair for a little less usually at the swap meets - but they don't come with a guarantee that numbers are good. Once you have your plates you have to mail them off with $250 to the ministry for them to approve them for use. Not refundable. So if they say NO - you're out your $250 plus whatever you paid for the plates. Seemed like a no brainer to me to get from a place offering a guarantee instead of saving $20 at a swap meet and hoping for the best. If you get it wrong you've gotta $300 set of wall hangers... And then if you still wanna get YOM plates you gotta do it all over again.
Overall it did cost a lot but to me it just really does a lot for the look of my car. My truck has new plates though - no interest in YOM plates on my truck.

I have looked into that guy, I guess I will wait until the truck is all done for now, I was kind of hoping they were a blab/yellow plate the 56 plates are much simpler but not a huge difference other than they are the same for car or truck.

and the saga continues, lol. i just checked the ownership for the 50 f-1 truck and it says PAS - FIT on the owner side [left] an YOM on the the plate side [right]. looks like i may as well put wing-nuts on to hold them there till this is straightened out. lmao

I wouldn't make too much of this. Like I said before mine went from comm. plates to historic plates then to pass. plates . It only has two bucket seats from the factory. I just look at it as SERVICE ONTARIO sold me the plates and the ownership ,,all the numbers match everything should be legal. I'm just a factory worker what do I know.

just checked my ownership and it is marked com fit, guess theres no rhyme nore reason as to why some are com/pass, just the people behind every a counter.
Historic plates have to many restrictions worse than the ins. Companies I just want to go for a weekend drive take in a few car shows and cruse nights, even that sounds like trouble, hoping this truck isn't going to be a garage queen just to look at. I'd rather pay regular ins if so.
But let me guess, you probably can't get regular ins. my freind just restored a 79 mini and was able to get regular ins. He will drive it as his daily driver all summer.
Should be no reason you can't get regular insurance. It will cost more then what you would pay for classic /hobby insurance but won't come with restrictions.

I still won't have it out a lot this summer due to time constraints and the facct that its not pcompletely road ready, should be able to get some shakedown time into her, one I'm on the road for good I will defiantly be looking into regular ins.
A friend of mine had cheap classic insurance with Hagerty and was in a big accident in the rain, on a weekday, on the 401, and the adjuster wrote up $8000 in damage, which my buddy got in a cheque, and he fixed his truck (57 chevy) more or less (it was ratty somewhat anyways) for $500 and was back on the road soon thereafter, obviously totally satisfied in his coverage. He had historic plates, I believe.
I'll be running my YOM plates, requiring a $$$$$ sticker, but zero restrictions, and I'm insured with Hagerty as well for low cost that I'm happy to pay.

i agree on that fact about the historic plates being too restrictive, they are much more restrictive than the old car insurance is. i just had a review and up-date with my old car ins company, aka a price increase, and it is still cheaper than regular ins by far. their biggest concerns were using it as a daily driver to work and shopping mall sort of stuff. they did mention if i plan on an extended period in the states with one of them i should let them know in advance, other than that, drive on driver. $1600.00 approx for 4 cars = 400 per yr ea is less than 1/2 of what i pay for my daily driver. i tried to get my 22yr old bike covered but no, they don't do bikes.

i still say/believe there is going to be a crack down on all these historic plates being used the way they are on a lot of cars out there. these historic plates go back to a time when the old cars were just that, old cars that you didn't or couldn't jump into and go for drive anywhere or anytime. the perceived old cars today with all the modern power train stuff that is available, not so much anymore. around here in a smaller town you see the same bunch of cars driving around town nightly with them on and if they decide to crack down you are probably opening up a door to pollution and safety sh!t.
