Started taking the bed apart yesterday. This winters plans are obviously new bed wood. But also finally swap out the transmissions.
Figured might as well rip out the bed floor to give me some more light working under the truck! I'm trying to think of a different way to do the bed wood. I don't want to do just a typical stock bed with strips and hardwood.
All the cross members are actually pretty decent shape, the carriage bolt holes on the flanges on the bed sides are a bit messed up that's about it.
(wish I had a big garage to work in like some of you guys. lol)
Seen a couple of beds that use clear acrylic. Looks great but must be a bear to keep clean. Depending on your skill set, I have seen different wood then oak used which sets if off nicely as well. Or you go the industrial look with steel or checker plate.
i know your looking for different options nick but for a quick fix which really came out pretty decent i had a buddy put the boards in mine through his plainer and i put them back in. it surprised me how many times each board went through the plainer taking just a pubey hair off at a time. then i put them on saw horses and put 4 or 5 coats of varnish with a sealer on top. it really does rejuvenate the appearance but it is same ole-same ole. very reasonably priced, some beer, can of vrnish and sealer with your free labor of course. lol i wish i had some before pics but it turned out pretty good and reasonably priced.
i thought about an h-d logo applied to the bare wood and sealed in but i didn't
maybe just because i really like the logo which is unique to the make of the truck is this and then it wouldn't be same ole-same ole but with a twist.
you have more than enough talent for the job and there probably is a sealer with a u-v protector in it. just throwing it out there bud, but, you go first so i can see how it turns out. lmao-lol
I know this is a Chevy site but it has 266 pages of ideas that other people have tried.
It goes from standard wood, to checker plate, plastic, laminate, stainless and some really artistic stuff that does not belong in the bed of a truck that you actually plan on putting stuff in. LOL
I have a set of Red Oak boards for mine that I'm thinking of staining black to give both the black look with the grain texture. I've also seen gloss black strips and matte black strips but I'm still undecided. Shiny black boards and matte back strips looks prey cool, IMHO!
I thought for sure I'd have troubl getting the bolts out but they all came out no problem! I'm actually kinda considering switching to cast iron exhaust manifolds like a few people have been trying to talk me into. But they did come out much easier than I expected then too. Dropped right out the bottom without much trouble.

I'll prob not go through with it - but thought I'd look into it - borrowed a set last night to just see how they fit in my truck. Haven't had any issues with them but they're so close to so many things and bashed all to hell for clearance around some stuff. But to be honest I thought they'd be a bigger problem to remove and really weren't. The passenger side just dropped down without having to remove anything, drivers side just have to undo the shifter linkage and pull out the dipstick tube and they drop right out the bottom. Kinda thinking about maybe just coating the headers to see if it lowers the temps under the hood a bit and maybe extends the life of these headers?? not sure which way I'll get yet.
Engine Masters tested that... you should check this out! Hardly made any difference bashing the hell out of them.
They also tested manifold vs mid length vs long tube. Manifold to mid length not much difference - but going from manifolds to long tubes there is a considerable difference.

Their header test is not accurate as the long tubes dumped into a 3" collector. And the Hooker manifolds are way better than any stock SBC manifolds out there.
So, now that you've showed us that dinged headers don't do much for performance, I'm back on the "don't install manifolds on your truck" bandwagon.
Got the transmission out today. The e brake cable was chaffing the top of the case pretty bad. It's actually worn quite deep into the case. Hard to tell how deep it is from the pic. I'll have to do something about that.
