Hello Ontario Community hot Rodders, today I bought my first "drivable" car, I needed something that ran after i suffered though pushing the Porsche in and out of the garage every day. I also wanted something with floors. I wanted something North American so I could work on it with out a degree in space craft engineering

I've always wanted a 50s era cruiser. Something big, sleek, sounds loud and most importantly has a confy back seat.

it is a 4 door but that just means more friends I guess ;)

I found this 1951 Plymouth Cambridge on kijiji  and instantly showed my dad and asked to go see it . 2 days later we are heading up to Owen sound with a trailer and cash.

As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it, It's no where neer perfect but luckily  I'm only 15 so I have lots of time to fix what's wrong. Even though me and my dad are going to try and licence it now for us to cruise around In since it runs like a charm almost.

My dreams right now are to lay it on the ground and some how "hop it up"

If anyone has any knowledge on this car of what to do & and what not to do that would be highly appreciated ! Thanks

enjoy image.jpeg

That is a cool car Daniel. When I was a teenager I worked at a Supertest gas station. One of the other guys that worked there who was older then me had a Dodge pickup about the same year as your car. It has a flathead 6 in it and I'm guessing your car does too. He had dual glass pack mufflers on it. It had a cool sound of it's own. Nothing else sounded as good as it did. Congratulations

Every time I pass this picture I see that smile on your face , looks like you just got away with something !!! biggrin Like talking your dad into getting the car for you..There is some performance stuff for those flathead 6 dodge/Plymouths.. There are dual carb spit manifolds and you could convert it to Pertronics electronic ignition and put a hotter coil on it also available from Pertronics, I know it's not plentiful for those performance parts but it is out there.. Nice car and I like that sea green paint color.. how about an under hood picture and a interior picture .. looks good on you ...

Daniel. Here is a picture of one I did for a guy out of London about 3 years ago.. this was hauled out of field it had been sitting rotting in for 20 years..was just a piece of junk old flat-6 with a cracked block fenders rotted back to wheels nothing for head lights or pots..I hand made those fenders rear quarters and the skirts, that's what I started with took me almost 2 years.. but it looks like the same color as yours.. and it is also a Plymouth, a Savoy.. color was Seafoam Green , and I forgot  the name of the white but I still have a bit left over ..Nice combination of colors.. I thought you might like to see it for the colors.. When I seen the pictures of yours I thought of how much those colors looked the same.Yours has great looking interior, Keep your mind out of that back seat..biggrin That can get expensive and eat up all your car money.. yah hear me ...biggrin

Great looking ride, those flathead 6cyl run good............take your time and only do small changes on this one for the time being. Then over the next winter you can pick a few things to alter and make better :) . With the knowledge you gained by your enthusiasm with the Porsche, I think you can enjoy this with your Dad for few years............great stepping stone....

Just curious - Have you looked into insurance at all for once you're of driving age?
Have you had a chance to go over it yet? - is it a driver as it sits?

Nice looking ride

A little advice
I drove a 1952 dodge pickup in my teenage years and it had a flat head 6 as well. Good motor but hated rain. Did not matter what I did to correct it the rain was always a no start for me.
If you run into the same problem do what I did.
Watch the weather prediction the night before if they call for rain park where you have access to a bit of a hill then give her a push and hop in and put in gear and pop the clutch.
It worked for me for years LOL.
My buddy drove a 1952 Dodge 4 door it was also a great car.
Great memories and now you get to create your own.
Congratulations

Pete

don't listen to them other old fart's daniel. at 15 years old you should be trying to wear that back seat out for crying out loud. just play safe and don't get caught up with your rubber's down is all. you seem pretty sharp so you will figure out the money end of it as you go along. nice car kid, i use to buy similar style cars way back in the day for winter beaters because of them big back seats. good luck and have a blast cause 50 or so years from now all you will have is the memories you create now. shhhhish, 15yrs old.       rick

That's an amazingly neat and clean original car Daniel,... you certainly don't have to be ashamed of taking that to a cruise night,..and no doubt a great number of people there will be telling you that they owned one back in the day,..helluva find Bud,..good on ya' !! I live in the heart of tobacco country here in SW Ontario,..and back in the day, ( 1950's ) those were the cars of choice,...I think every tobacco farmer in my area owned a Dodge or Plymouth car and a Dodge pick-up truck for farm and daily use,..the cars generally sat in the garages until the weekend family outing. Again,..great find Daniel,..you own a real cool piece of history there !!

Hey everyone, the car is going good! I took out the rad and got someone to fix that for me then I dropped it back in.

been cleaning it up alot. replaced some chrome, going at the interior right now. But other then that I'm trying to make it look good. I've got it appraised for more then double what I bought it for "that makes me feel good" now I'm looking for someone to safety it so I can take it to the e.l.t.a summer bash. So if anyone knows anyone who will safety a car with 1 eye sort of thing going easy on it please tell me:) that would be gladly apreciated

 here are some pics

That is just a real purty looking car Daniel. About the nicest one I have seen for a restoration .. If it's as good as looks you can drive it for your whole life and it's possible your grandkids could be driving it.. Those old Plymouths just kept on ticking. A lot of people just went and bought a new one  because the seats were wearing out and the engine wouldn't quit running.. But.. Most of them were low mileage as they were never driven in the rain, or wet sludgy days as I am sure many can attest to..smile actualy it's possible when you start to shave you should keep the bathroom window closed..But there is just something about that car that captures your eye..I am trying to envision it with wide white walls..Good on you for being so passionate for this hobby.. !5 and your bitten.. you are doomed to a life of hearing every squeak, rattle, windnoise, vibration in everything you will drive for the rest of your life. smile smile most of the things around the house will be neglected because, you will be in the garage or crusin..biggrin

-"life of hearing every squeak, rattle, windnoise, vibration in everything you will drive for the rest of your life."

back in the 80's when i got a new, to me and mostly freightliners, truck, after a couple of trips the inside would look like it had the measles with all the match book covers jammed into places to stop the squeaks and rattles. lol after about a month of tightening it up, usually a bigger screw or some insulation jammed in somewhere, i could start fine tuning the drive line for little irritating vibrations and noise's . usually tighten this and that or a better brand of tires or re-balance the driveshaft or maybe a u-joint or 2, etc. lol

daniel, as for a one eyed safety take the time and go for a two eyed safety with glasses on. its your first one and times are a changing sort of thingy, especially with insurance. just saying is all. Enjoy.

Check the connections on the dimmer switch. Could be just bad connections

rust in the dimmer switch......... or two burnt out headlights........ grab a test light and check the wires to the dimmer switch, with the lights on two of them should have power, then when you push it, the third should come to life and one of the others go off.

_
_ _ usually there are three prongs on the switch, the middle is power from the headlight switch, the bottom two are high an low
beam. Dimmer switch is fairly inexpensive if you need one. almost all floor mount ones are interchangeable..........

keep us posted, That should be one sweet cruiser when you get to drive it, meanwhile enjoy the ride from the passenger side :)

save and download the diagram attached  you will see that the headlight switch power comes from a 30 amp breaker...........no fuses...........Plymouth way ahead of its time.....

X2 on the safety. You have lots of time and lots of help/knowledge can be found here or elsewhere for you to learn the right way to do it. #1 it has to be safe!!! The last place you want to "cut corners" on is safety. Safe, cool,  fun and meeting great peoplewink.

That's what this life/"hobby"  is all about.

You'll get there. And you have a great head start.

We'll be watchin for ya and your ride.smile

Take your time - Do It Once Do It Right , with the new safety check legislation no one can afford to be short changed with a LOUSY interpretation by some cop or inspector. Good luck everyone is watching for your ride .

Where did you disappear to? What's happening to that Plymouth? Last we heard, the lights weren't working. We need enthusiastic young blood around here so keep in touch.

nothing wrong with this as its all part of the learning process. back in the day a lot of us would go through 2 or 3 maybe more of these things till we came across one that we kept for awhile. the pickings are slimmer today no doubt but its all part of the process of playing with this hobby. i am not actively looking for another car but if the right one came along, ???. i know most cars back then came by word of mouth or drive by but today with kijiji you never know what could come along and the ad was free.

what are you thinking about for another one daniel? not that i got one but you never know what one of us might know sitting somewhere. go slow and take your time choosing as the idea is to trade up to something you think you want, that is till the next one after that one. i seen something the other day, p.m. sent.

Hey everyone, sorry I have not been on here at all, I will get back to it :)
I did not sell the car yet but as of yesterday I put it on kijiji again.
I had it up for a while but then I wanted to keep it so I took it down and played with the car a little more taking things apart and putting it back together. But it's a big car and I have a single car garage and it's impossible to walk around the car in the garage so I have to back it out when ever I want to work on it. And it's Freezing this time of the year:(

I can admit I'm a little bored of it aswell. I wish I could put it somewhere inside for 10 years or so then go back to it and be in love with it again lol, I'm going to keep it forsale for a while and if it sells in a few weeks I'll get somthing a little smaller but if it does not sell I will gladly keep it and tinker with it a little more :)

But besides the car I'm working part time at Harvey's and starting my oyap program "Ontario youth apprentice program "on Monday :) very exited for that

LOL- "I wish I could put it somewhere inside for 10 years or so then go back to it and be in love with it again lol," -LOL
now that right there is actually pretty funny dan. i can just about guarantee you that there ain't to many of us on here who haven't said something real similar to that line in one form or another. lets not forget, i would love to have that one back. not hard to tell you are still pretty young daniel only thinking 10yrs out, dang, i am thinking 40-50yrs back. you gotta a leg up on a lot of us when we were your age with all this computer info out there as there isn't too much you can do with these old cars that someone hasn't put on you-tube or similar. there is a world of smarts on this form and others also. a lot of stuff i/we learned was by the seat of our pants or trial and error and if it didn't work right we had to save up and give another shot.

your a gearhead or will be with that logic. dang 10yrs-lol

p.s. i can remember working over/under these things at you age at this time of year outside. BRRRrr

OK, now for the next part of this cars story............ My son purchased the Plymouth this evening from Daniel........So from one Daniel to another it goes :). Took the car out for a ride and it seems to run pretty nice, yes it has a few zits in the paint and along the bottom, but we think it will be fun for him this summer.............

Thanks Daniel for taking care of this car and bringing it up a level from when you found it......

Good luck on the next one, Your Dad told me what you are thinking and it sounds pretty cool to me!!

I am not telling, so it will be up to Daniel, also he should share some pics of his Dad's street rod.......they have been holding out on us....he has a Morris Minor with a Datsun drive train, that has been running strong for them for 6 years now..............

My son is eagerly waiting to get the car home so we can get it plated and on the road before cruising season begins, be sure to look for it on Queen St in Niagara Falls on Tuesday evenings when he isn't working.......
