I am certain everyone is watching TV. Looks like this is a serious Virus.Lets all do our part, check on your elderly & be sure they have enough to get through.

Wash-wash-wash. And your pets.

All country's are co operating on this. When was the last time that happened? I watched the W5 interview of the Canadian Dr  who went to Wauhn  when this came out and he came back worried. It rapidly killed 30-40-50- yr old group and he does not know why.

Strange all Canadian deaths are on the west coast & USA also. I am thinking it is air borne and we are not being told the truth. Not to incite fear, we need to look at everything logically.

Stay safe my friends,we will see you all after this goes over

My wife and I were to go on holidays, cancelled by Sunwing
2 daughters university schools closed.
Wife working from home.
I have a coworker in 2 week quarantine.
Went to Guelph yesterday to pick up my youngest daughter as residence where she was living is closed.
Drove through Toronto 120-130KPH the whole way. I can't remember the last time I did that.
I've heard Montreal and Ottawa is just as quiet.

It is "airborne" only if someone sneezes. Droplets can float around. Once they land, then touch gets them moving along nicely.
No conspiracies.

The country will shut down within 2 weeks.
By that time, we will have over 10,000 cases.

I have enough supplies and things to do on the rod. A "real" vacation for the first time in 22 years sounds nice.
Don't like the reason for it and the fact people are dying, don't get me wrong.

The Town of St.Marys has declared a state of emergency over the COVID-19 situation.

Following the lead of the Province of Ontario, St.Marys Mayor Al Strathdee made the decision with two confirmed cases of COVID-19 among the town’s residents.

Officials say declaring a state of emergency ensures that the town can act quickly and decisively in response to emerging issues.

It also offers protection to volunteers and preserves the rights of the municipality for future compensation related to the crisis.

The town’s municipal offices, recreation and leisure facilities, child care centre and train station are all closed indefinitely.

The Town will be providing regular updates through its website and social media accounts as the situation progresses.

For me I think this is all a big over reaction,, I think they are just friggin insane..and I think it's just abig scam..  More people die from the flu every year but this is the first time they bankrupt the country for it.. Pretty much wiped out evert thing I had saved in RRSPs.. I worked for Chuck all my life so I have no company pension except what I had saved in my mutual funds in RRSPs for the last 25 years..

No scam.

Facts are that once so many catch it, there will be a high number requiring hospitalization.

This is the biggest deal of it. A guy having a heart attack or other severe emergency will die in the waiting room.

Doctors and nurses will be working 18 hours a day non stop. It will be a total disaster.

I do believe the amount of cases is ready to spike and will hit 10,000 in Canada within 2 weeks.

I hope I'm wrong.

I'm with Pugsy on this one. It is a big deal, very contagious. Lots of people dying, older people yes, they all have kids, grand kids and others that love them. My fear is for young people as well. I think of my youngest son who's best friend has cystic fibrosis and about 25% lung capacity, poor guy. I think of my middle son, his girl has MS and is now at home because her job as an addiction recovery person puts her at high risk. I think of all the people that have entry level jobs, part time jobs that have been laid off. They will get money but there will be some time between their last check and the EI check. The list goes on.
Sorry Chuk, in most cases I like you, you do a lot of good, you have had your share and more of struggles over the last few years but on this one I have to disagree with you.
Lots of my investments are way down as well. I don't need them all tomorrow. They will recover for sure. I to don't have any pension plan. And now with this slow down/shut down I am short on work as well. Self employed, so no work, no pay. I will work through this. I do believe God is in control. There have been some cool stories showing up as well. People in China have seen blue sky and stars. Pollution has blocked that for a long time. Another area of the world dolphins have shown up, they have not been there in a long time. The world as a whole is getting cleaned up. We will get through this together guys.

I sure would not anybody to be infected and die.. But I just can't get this wrapped around my mind.. I think if it is so bad there are still a lot of people out and about.. I took the dog for a walk yesterday.. Looked pretty busy in town with CTC open, all the grocery stores are open, I seen the parking lot at Wlmart pretty full of cars and seen people pushing carts to their cars.. Beer stores are open. liquor stores.. .. Roads are quiet, I don't know and I sure don't want anybody I know sick and I do understand it would be bad to hit long term care homes.. but I don't know  I still think more people die from the flu around the world every year but this one they are just over reacting and will destroy the economy and a lot of people and small business's are going to be hurt financialy pretty bad, all the money the government is throwing away so carelessly will have to paid back by Taxpayers.. US and there will be a ton of scammers getting a lot of that government money as they do not have good checks and balances.. I think it's like a snowball rolling down a mountain and just getting bigger.. Just sayin.. I just think it's a poorly managed over reaction.. and as usual the leadership is all over the place, and they always think the answer is just throw away money at ..Our Money.. I am not really disagreeing with you Martin or Puggsy.. Just thinking out loud..

I think it is a major concern and it should be. It has to be controlled to help snuff it out. On friday we had to go to the drug store to pick up meds. The other day we were there to pick up the same meds that were not ready yet. Both times there was a person flipping out over different things but both times it was virus related. I have been working in the shop during this. I needed to get some paint supplies. They were open but only by appointment. I made the appointment (at Brown's Auto Supply) to go in to buy the goods I needed. It turns out they only let one person in the store at a time. The guy behind the counter who has always been great has the order ready and in a box. I paid for it and left. As I sat there taking my rubber gloves off and cleaning my hands and card I had used I noticed the employee come outside and clean the door handle I had used. I thought GOOD for him doing that to protect his customers. I have a few concerns about this virus. First is how early did the leaders of the new world know about it?  How long is it going to last is a concern but I keep thinking where did it really come from? Was it sent to the rest of the world?
What do you think?

From what is on the info highway my wife has read back about 35-45 yrs ago there was a lot of poverty in China. Because of this the Government allowed harvesting of wildlife for food, which in time they could raise and sell in what are called 'Wet markets' that continue to day-  S A R S  was a virus from the Civet cat. This one is Bat/Pendolin mix from what I have found. This one enters the throat  in days moves to the Lungs- Mortality rate is high;look at Italy,Spain  the UK - There will be plenty of finger pointing on this;the world knows where it came from.Which may lead to more trouble.

We can expect this to hang around for 7-9 or more months.Don't kid yourselves.Anyone on Prednizone( my wife) or other Immune blockers is at risk;as are smokers, asthma, any lung/breathing issues.

From a fellow racer

 Try this

Sharing for those who still live in denial

I just received the following info from a good friend's son-in-law who has a PhD in Cell Biology. He has studied and works in virology and wanted to share with his family and friends some information and insight into the COVID 19 crisis impacting the world. He also explains why the measures taken by governments around the world to slow the spread of the virus are so important.

I really appreciated the information and his perspective and thought it would be helpful to pass on.

Take Care,

Carol

--------

 On Mar 15, 2020, at 1:34 PM,

This week, the world reached a tipping point with the emergence of pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. Since I study this for a living, I feel it is important for me to provide you with information on what is known, where things stand, and where things are headed. This information will help you understand the decisions made by your local officials, and give you an opportunity to make informed decisions for your health and safety. There is a lot of misinformation and fear that is being spread… a pandemic in its own right. What I aim to convey is a straight, unbiased, and unfiltered view of things that will enable you to make decisions for yourself and your families rather than have them made for you.

The novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, began infecting humans in late November in the Hubei region of China. We have identified its origin. Transmission occurred from bat to a pangolin, and then to humans. The bat to pangolin transmission was likely through a fecal-oral route, whereas transmission to humans was likely from surface contact of infectious virus particles from the pangolin to mucous membranes in the upper respiratory tract of a human. An almost identical transmission route led to the first SARS virus 18 years ago. The timing of this animal-to-human transmission isn’t precisely known, it likely occurred sometime between late summer and early fall. The human outbreak began in late November, or early December, with sustained human-to-human transmission originating from a popular fish market in Wuhan.

Coronaviruses have been studied since the 1960’s and there are human strains that circulate throughout the human population that give us the same symptoms as the common cold. It’s an enveloped virus, which means that like our cells, it is covered by a lipid (fat) membrane that protects it’s genome. It’s called a ‘corona’ (a Latin word, meaning crown or garland) virus because of the shape of a protein, termed spike, that protrudes from the lipid bilayer. Spike binds to a receptor protein to gain entry into a cell so that the virus can be replicated. One of the receptors it binds to is ACE2 or angiotensin converting enzyme 2. ACE2 is found on type II alveolar cells in your lungs and on vascular endothelial cells. It’s functions modulate the heart. It’s also highly expressed in the kidney, intestines, testis, and adrenal glands. As I will explain, this information will help you understand COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.

Once you are infected, the virus begins to replicate and spread to ACE2-expressing cells throughout your body. This takes roughly one week, which is the average time it takes for symptoms to occur. Many people experience a runny nose and a dry cough. Some people report diarrhea. These symptoms depend on which cells are infected first, and how fast the virus is able to spread through your body. The infection leads to a fever (having a body temperature above 37.8 ˚C) and you will experience these symptoms for the next ten to twenty days. If your infection is very mild, this will be all you experience. ~80% of people will have a mild infection that is anything between these symptoms and walking pneumonia. For 20% of the population, symptoms will be more severe than walking pneumonia and they will require hospitalization. For these patients, a lower respiratory tract infection will take hold, requiring ventilation. For 6-8% of the population, severe respiratory distress and heart problems will occur. If left untreated, these people will die, and even with treatment, many do die.

Known risk factors that impact the severity of disease include age, diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, vaping, asthma, COPD, and other respiratory or heart conditions. However, healthy 20-30-year old’s, with none of these risk factors, also die from COVID-19. We can’t predict who will get this severe form of the disease. There are many unknowns. For example, in addition to ACE2, the virus can use other receptors that are still being identified.

Two mysteries worth discussing in more detail are that first responders, regardless of age, are more prone to get the severe form of the disease, whereas children and young adolescents are asymptomatic. However, even though children are asymptomatic, they are “super-spreaders” and shed a lot of virus in their mucous and stool. For the first responders, it’s thought that being exposed to a lot of virus might allow it to replicate through your body more rapidly, leading to severe symptoms.

To confront SARS-CoV-2, we need to identify infected people, isolate them, identify their contacts, and have those people self-quarantine. In Wuhan, where the virus was endemic before the government responded, the outbreak led to a breakdown of the health system. Many health workers, including the 29-year-old Doctor that first identified this virus, became infected and died from the disease. This made things more dire in Wuhan, than in other Chinese provinces, which were able to prepare and respond. Since January 23, this region has been in lockdown, massive tent hospitals were built, and a massive screening system was introduced to identify infected people and quarantine them. Using these methods, China has lowered the numbers of infections. However, this has come at the cost of having their entire population experience a house arrest that has lasted anywhere from 10 days to still being in lockdown. They are at risk for reemergence.

Containment has been the policy pursued in North America, but containment has failed. This includes Alberta. The virus is endemic and is spreading through our communities with a doubling rate of six days. Again, this is because the virus is highly infectious, and people spread it before they get symptoms. The virus can survive on plastic and stainless steel for 72 hours. On paper and cardboard, it survives for 24 hours, on copper it survives for 4-8 hours. When aerosolized by breathing, it survives in the air for 3 hours. As a result, one infected person infects 2-4 other individuals. Families with children see rapid spread of the virus to the whole family.

SARS-CoV-2 is 4-20 times more deadly than influenza and it hospitalizes 20% of those infected. In the next two weeks we will see the US medical system get inundated with this virus (like what has happened in Wuhan and Italy). The US only has 160,000 ventilators and medical supplies will run out. Canada is on a similar trajectory.

Strict social distancing will be the only thing that slows this down enough to prevent a catastrophe. This means staying 6 feet away from each other, avoiding groups larger than 5, and staying at home as much as possible. Because the virus is an enveloped virus, you can easily disinfect yourself and surfaces with soap and water. So good hygiene helps.
As you can imagine, this pandemic will incur huge economic costs. We will be at risk for reemergence of the virus for the next 18-24 months.

Due to the exponential rate of growth, what is about to happen to our way of life is going to be highly disorientating and will come as a shock to many. Social distancing will strain the types of social interactions that we depend and rely on. This will have long-term consequences as the service economy suffers and students miss education opportunities. Being prepared and anticipating these events will help us get through the next few months.

The wife has the flu since yesterday. Is it the flu? She is in isolation in her office now. Has a mattress in there.
The kids and I have to keep away. Every time I touch any surface in the house, I go and wash my hands...again.
I will use my hands to sand down the rod soon.
I told her to get checked. I have to keep out of the office at work now. That's great as I run the shop.....jeez.....what a cluster%$)!......masked and gloved up at the office now before anyone gets here.
Grabbing any paperwork I can take home with me.....

Ya, it's real....jeez.....

As Chuck mentioned, he saw people all over spreading the virus. I wish the morons would just lock it down now as it WILL be locked down anyways within two weeks.

That is what is confusing to me.. why don't they " Our Government"just get serious and stop ANY INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS , or ANYBODY FROM ANY COUNTRY AT THIS TIME even if they are Canadians that went on vacation knowing full well this was out there and had a high infection rate and stop them from entering the country, especially if they have been to or are returning from countries with a high infection rate.... untill they get it under control or is this going to be an anual thing.. My fear is that terrorists will soon be able to terrorize us with another form of this .. easier and cheaper for them to infect a few suicide flu carrieres.. don't have to buy weapons to kill or terrorize.. just seems to me our leadership is stretching this out by not taking a leadership role and closing the border and any passenger flights from traveling for a week or two or what ever it takes.. Yesterday I beleive I heard two people in TO died and bother were people who just came back from another country or at least flying from some place on a plane and brought the disease here. They did not contract it here. They however probably have now spread it to thers including out front line health care workers..and those who have died "MOST" allready had underlying imune systems that were comprimised.

Marten: I am praying your wife just has a mild flu.. Take care my friend

Well took the dog for a walk in the park and whilst driving through town I still see the parking lot at the independent grocery store full of cars and people shopping, nobody standing out side waiting.. people just grabbing a cart and heading in the store.. There were more than a 100 cars/trucks in the lot.. Downtown looks like a Sunday but still witnessed one retuarant with an open sign in the window, could not tell if anybody was inside.. The dollar store parking lot pretty full also.. So this is a small town population just about 6000 and a lot of people not really practicing social distancing at all.. so if this just one small town in Ontario is not observing the  self isolation rule how many do you think are out mixing with others.. and how will it help to stop the spread of infection.. I think it might be a time for reservists or a larger police presence at Stores and places that are not observing the request to close if your non essential.. it really will require some enforcement or what is the use..

Ottawa has been a work from home place for a week or so now. I have been working in the downtown area, the heart of the city per say. It is like a ghost town. No cars, no people, businesses closed. Even getting parking is a piece of cake. Kind of freeky. Add to that the cloudy days and I am working on a floor that has a slight grey tint to the window. Heard on the news this afternoon that everything is to be shut down. I am now officially unemployed. Well as much as a self employed person can be . No EI for me. A mixed blessing for sure. I will get lots of hot rod time. I hope I have enough parts to keep going for the next couple of weeks. No income though. And the American dollar has gone south to warmer weather I think. And my box in the states is closed up for now. Well I will make the best of this. I will be home more, more hot rod time and whatever else I can find to do here.

You only got a partial list there.
All manufacturing is wide open. Damn, I'm at work now.
There were the same amount of cars on the road this morning.

What a joke!

I went to Montreal this morning then to Ottawa. Very quiet.
I wish they take this down in traffic time to fix the road.

Things are getting locked down up here. Trains going through here in the wee hours are loaded with military vehicles.
I have siblings that are front line workers at 2 different hospitals. They are on restricted use of ppe’s and any and all industries that have masks are being begged to please donate.
Living in a very small community makes it much easier to stay isolated.
Hoping everyone stays safe and at home.
A great time to work on our cars and also get that honey do list done.

Janice, the trains are bringing equipment back from cancelled training in Alberta. My son has been moving some of it. The army is not taking over anything.

Still looks like a over reaction to me.. looking at the numbers from all the other things that have much higher death numbers.. just seasonal flu alone every year ..My personal opinion I think this is a big over reaction .. This is destroying our economy.. I think it's crazy.or something weird is going on that we don't know, I just think it's strange to shut the whole country down for a flu bug.. We didn't do it with Sars, or the swine flu and they all came from China Again but , we did not cripple the economy.. I think doing that has has made this whole thing worse ..

Chuck,
I think looking at just the current deaths doesn't put this new virus into perspective.

here is a blurb from an article.

Death rate

Initial data show that the coronavirus is deadlier. In the U.S., seasonal flu kills 1 in a thousand people (0.1%) who get sick from it — the death toll last season was more than 34,000. Worldwide, an estimated 300,000 to 650,000 people die from flu each year.

By contrast, COVID-19 is currently estimated to kill at least 10 people per thousand infected (1%). "It's about 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease, in congressional testimony on March 11.

If this new virus eventually infects as many people as the Flu, The total numbers of deaths will show that the world is not over reacting.

I guess I am a skeptic.. I just do not beleive it.. I have been hearing about this new world government/order for years and I just think it's an over reaction and so many people will be unemployed and small business's will be bankrupt, we will be hearing for the next 20 years how they need to tax the hell out us to pay for all the scams that will grab money that the government is throwing at everybody, no checks and balances Millions will never be accounted for.. WE, will have to pay this bill or our children and grand children will.. I think it's a scam or man made pandemic.. Why the hell do we have anything to do with CHINA, every one of these virus the last few years come out of that crap country .. If we just quit dealing with CHINA it will save our health system and our financial system ..I don't think we should do any trade with China..  I don't know if I am right but I don't believe a word that comes out of the governments mouth They are the biggest legal liars and scammers in my view,,I don't trust them with anything.. they are all liars and scammers.. I just know it will forever change our economy and life  as we knew it in this country.. I think we need to get back to normal and everybody needs to get back to work right after Easter.. and if we are lucky we might get back on track but if this goes till the end of April or more there will a lot of people that will never get those jobs back. this country will be in a hell of a state... I  hope I am wrong but,  I have this really bad feeling in my gut that it's destroying everything in this country. something about this whole thing doesn't sit well in my mind... that is just my personal opinion..

Clearly there are a few different opinions here. How about we all agree to disagree. We will wait and see how this lays out. People way smarter then me on the subject are helping to guide this process. I have seen all kinds of opinions both for and against it. The stuff I have seen from people that have had covic-19 is enough to scare the hell out of me. So how about those that need to be safe and self isolate come to my place and help me with the truck. Those that think they are immune, or if it is over blown can go to work and if you get sick, well let us know how you are doing please.

Chuck,
I have no doubt that our children and grandchildren will pay for what the government is doling out for this pandemic.

My concerns are with how fast this virus is spreading and the mortality rate that will be at the end of this pandemic. I fear for one of my kids who has underlying issues and hope she does not get the virus.

Marten,
Unfortunately I am one of those that are deemed as essential, but have the luxury to work from home 90% of the time. But was in the office right up until last week.

I am not going to post about this anymore.. I absolutley understand that anybody that has a comprimised imune system is very likely to get very ill should they get this virus.. I know that and I pray that  nobody from here or their family or friends should get sick.. it is not my intent to disparage anyone.. unfortunately I am quite worried more about how I will live when this has past .. I don't have the luxury of having a company pension.. I worked my ass off for years working 60 hours a week and more, saved and saved for my retirement.. steadly saved a bit every week, and I am watching my life savings dissapear in front of my eyes.. I am down close to 40% of my medium risk mutual funds..I don't think this country will ever be the same and many of 100,000 jobs that get lost will ever come back So please excuse me for being nervous and frightend about how I will get by the rest of my life.I don't see any Goverment handouts for me.. why in hell don't they close the Stockmarket ??. Yes maybe it's a bit selfish but it is what it is.. Why are they pissing around and piecemealing this stay home Chit , don't go work, keep your distance and every day or two they do a little of this or a little of that, change the rules so everybody is confused .. They need to get their Chit together and shut the damn province or country down for a couple or three weeks and get it resolved..period except for emergency service personel.. I have no faith in any level of government, They are all dumb as a bag of hammers and do not have a clue what the hell they are doing or saying.. I pray that nobody here gets sick.. I will just keep my opinions to myself on this.. Everybody has a different situation and have loved ones that could be very suceptable to getting very sick.. I hope that does not happen to anybody.. I wish everybody Gods blessing and hope for the best.. I will zip my lips on this till it has passed.. Take care of your self and your family..
