Surprised me here in Fort Erie. Heavy ice when we got up this morning and heavy rain for a few hours. Ice built up on trees and roads and i expected power outages but, never happened. Started to melt off after lunch and now trees are ice free,
Not here Larry, ice kept building all day. Branches ( 2-3" dia) started shearing off a couple Maples on my place across the driveway. I was picking them up and dragging them off toward my brush pile, stepped around the corner of a shed to take a leak and while doing so missed getting clobbered by a 24" dia - 40' long branch that let go and landed right on top of the brush I'd just left.
I decided to go in the wood shop and clean up tomorrow, lol.
It's kind of funny you posted this Junior. My neighbor was without hydro for a 24 hour span earlier in the week. I had looked up your post ( RE: What the @#&K) about the Generator connection and sent the picture to him. I think I'm going to look into getting that installed.
Bought a 8500W generator a few years back with a 220 outlet. I have a 100A service to the garage so I installed a dryer outlet near the panel. I built an electrical box with two cables coming from it. One with a plug to use in the generator outlet and a second that plugs in the dryer outlet. If the power goes off, I flip the 200A main breaker off, plug in the two cables in the garage and have the brightest house on the road. My neighbor installed a self switching generator which does the same thing but cost him over 10K and earlier this year when we had our first outage, it misbehaved and fried all the electronics in the house, fridge, TVs, computers etc. My system, although it takes 2 minutes to fire up, cost me $400. I just have to make sure I have gas on hand. Used it three times so far this fall, best investment I ever made as some of my neighbours who sought shelter here will attest to.
We have a generator that comes on and shuts off automatically and I must admit, my wife was smart when she said we should get one. Our power used to go off a lot and my neighbour who works for hydro said Hydro no longer does preventative maintenance on tree branches. Cut backs have made it so Hydro only does repairs now so now more than ever, a generator makes sense. And I can barely hear our generator. It sounds like a distant lawn mower if I can hear it at all. Never without running water or lights now. A wise investment. For you guys with heated garages, you might want it even more.

I like this idea. I've been having this feeling that I need a generator this year.
My garage is back fed thru a 60 AMP breaker. I could do the same thing. Now, if only I could get a NG unit and T off the garage supply line.
It's not a better idea, just one variation. With outages more common then ever, a generator has become as much a necessity as a stove. If I was building a new home, I would definitely have an automatic backup generator installed. My way was just more affordable in a 168 year old house.
