if you look at the cam and water pump holes etc you will see how the holes are off to one side.first thing I would look for when looking for a block to build.easy to point out in person

As said above. The cam 'tunnel': casting surrounding the front bearing should be even (machined surface) around the circumfrence of the hole. The water pump mounting position the same-casting amounts equal each side. Core shift can be check on the deck surface, bolt hole locations as well and the cooling hole locations in relation to the bore.
Jenkins did this to find the "optimum" mouse motor
This is usually were they break and take out all sorts of stuff .

I just went and took a pic of the front of this block now that I understand what you were describing... you were correct it has core shift. Pretty sharp eye. In over 40 years of playing with motors I don't think I have ever noticed or realized it before. Now the big question, can the block still be used ? Just not for the optimum high horsepower small block.

Possibly, only after being checked by a competent automotive machinist. Why put money into it and have it Grenade , junior

I am sure junior will comment further but I would look for core shift in the 350 blocks also.possibly if they now use AI to install the cores it may be a thing of the past but I do not think so.a sonic test on cylinder wall would probably show how much before over boring but lifter bores etc are affected also.as compression and hp raised it would become a major concern.my 2 pennies

Junior please educate us and explain how this is visible. At least to the untrained eye.
A better picture of the cam tunnel. This block has core shift and is advertized as a Warranty block.(on kijiji now)
that one sticks out don't it. truthfully i had forgot about this dilemma until you mentioned it here and then the flood gates opened in my mind, lol, which is seldom lately. this one is pretty obvious once you know what you are looking for but i remember back in the day we were building a high h/p 327 and the machinist at he time told us to keep looking for another block and we were wondering w.t.f. until he explained it.
good eye.
