1955
- Merely, 62 Years Ago…These comments made in the year 1955!
I'll tell you one thing, if thingskeep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossibletobuy a week’s groceries for $10.00.
Have you seen the new carscoming out next year? It won'tbe long before $1,000.00 willonly buy a used one.
If cigarettes keep going up inprice, I'm going to quit; 20 centsa pack is ridiculous.
Did you hear the post office isthinking about charging 7 centsjust to mail a letter.
If they raise the minimum wageto $1.00, nobody will be able tohire outside help at the store.
When I first started driving, whowould have thought gas wouldsomeday cost more than 20 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leavingthe car in the garage. I'm afraid to send my kids to themovies any more. Ever since theylet Clark Gable get by with sayingDAMN inGONE WITH THE WIND,it seems every new movie haseither HELL or DAMN in it.. I read the other day where somescientist thinks it's possible to puta man on the moon by the end ofthe century. They even have somefellows they call astronautspreparing for it down in Texas. Did you see where some baseballplayer just signed a contract for$50,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn'tsurprise me if somedaythey'll be making more than thePresident.. I never thought I'd see the dayall our kitchen appliances would be electric. They're even makingelectric typewriters now. It's too bad things are so toughnowadays.I see where a fewmarried womenare having towork to make ends meet. It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids sothey can both work.
I'm afraid the Volkswagen caris going to open the door to awhole lot of foreign business. Thank goodness I won't live tosee the day when the Governmenttakes half our income in taxes. Isometimes wonder if we areelecting the best people togovernment. The fast food restaurant isconvenient for a quick meal, but I seriously doubt theywill ever catch on. There is no sense going on shorttrips anymore for a weekend. Itcosts nearly $2.00 a night to stayin a motel! No one can afford to be sickanymore. At $15.00 a day in the hospital, it's too rich formy blood.
Know any friendswho would get akick out of these, pass this on! Besure and send itto your kids.

Hard to believe eh!!! .. I can remember gas at 7 cents a "GALLON".. and I can remember not being able to get $5.00 worth in the tank. i used to work at a car wash on Carling ave in Ottawa where we advertised a free wash with $4.99 in gas ,, Not many free washes.. even trying to fill the filler neck before the days of Charcoal canisters.. .. Wish I could find some of those $2.00 motel rooms to-day Thanks for the memories.. now I'm depressed..

I don't remember gas that cheap but then I'm just a pup. I do remember in about mid '60's a guy that worked at Gary Carr's Shell had a '60-'63 Falcon with a straight axle in it. I used to walk down and admire that car!!! For about 50 years I asked people (from the area) who owned it with no luck. Well just a few years ago I found out who owned it. That was so cool to me. I do remember when in high school I had a part time job to support my inspired somewhat hot rod Falcon. It was at the local IGA. I had to help a lady carry $30 worth of groceries out. It was all we could do to get the groceries in her Beetle. Thanks for the trip down the lane TMJ
Sorry to sort of derail your topic Rick. Your turn Chuck
I remember them days well. Gas at 12 cents a gallon , filling my 51 Chev for less than $2.00, cigarettes for 25 cents a large pack and a coffee and burger for 35 cents.
6 cents to get in to a movie. And change to get a candy bar. Probably around 1944 Yeah, I'm old.
Yep. i remember the old Capital Theatre in Niagara Falls . Saturday mornings , news reel, cartoon, short serial film, ( flash Gordon, Dick tracey) etc. and the feature film, usually Roy Rogers or Gene Autry, all for 25 cents included admission and popcorn and small drink. Those were the days.
in the early 70's i drove truck for esso on the big trains delivering to their stations and farm agents in the outbacks north and east of toronto. most of the old stations were owned by esso and the rent was collected on a per gallon basis with each delivery which was collected per delivery. i remember the tax on diesel fuel was more than cost of the fuel that we delivered. i'm thinking not much has probably changed, lol. i remember the odd place we went to you got the money before you pulled the handle, lol.
