My leg wound..and pain
Permalink

I have had a couple people asking about my Leg wound.. So, this has been going on since Thanksgiving in October.. This is going on over 4 months and it's worse now.. It has been sore as hell and if anything touches it the pain goes from 0 to 100 in a millisecond and takes an hr to stop burning and stinging.. I have not been able to sleep for more than 4hrs without waking up in pain and I have to get up, change the dressing and put some pain relief cream that numbs it so I can sleep.. That coupled with Diane needing 24 hr care has kept me in the house and frustrated most of the winter.. I also need to go in the hospital on Wednesday to have a growth in my throat removed.... Seems that since I hit the seventies, I spend more time in waiting rooms to tests, inspections, rejections, injections. infections  and on and on.. These pictures are from last night of my leg.. they are pretty gross to look at and pretty gross for pain and showering.. I am scheduled to see a wound specialist on Tuesday.  They have ordered some kind of special membrane that they use for burn victims and bad injuries.. So I am hoping to get this fixed soon. I can't tolerate this pain much longer or I will be sitting in every friggen emergency room  calling the Medical profession a bunch of backyarders..This is getting pretty stupid after 4 months..I have been using the Manuka honey.. with no love..

My god, you are one tough SOB. That is the most painful looking thing I have seen in a long time, I had hoped you were on the road to recovery.

Hopefully someone will figure out what is happening here and get you sorted. Best of luck.

Sorry to see the wound not healing...does look painful.

We had a WWII trained Doc. that used Maggots on a St. Thomas clients leg wound, to avoid a scheduled amputation (by another surgeon).
- the new patient kept his legs & fully recovered, and didn't even need a walking cane

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How Maggots Heal Wounds
By Paul GabrielsenDec. 6, 2012 , 1:20 PM www.sciencemag.org/news/2012/12/how-maggots-heal-wounds

Yes, maggots are creepy, crawly, and slimy. But that slime is a remarkable healing balm, used by battlefield surgeons for centuries to close wounds. Now, researchers say they've figured out how the fly larvae work their magic: They suppress our immune system.

Maggots are efficient consumers of dead tissue. They munch on rotting flesh, leaving healthy tissue practically unscathed. Physicians in Napoleon's army used the larvae to clean wounds. In World War I, American surgeon William Baer noticed that soldiers with maggot-infested gashes didn't have the expected infection or swelling seen in other patients. The rise of penicillin in the 1940s made clinical maggots less useful, but they bounced back in the 1990s when antibiotic-resistant bacteria created a new demand for alternative treatments. In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved maggot therapy as a prescription treatment.

Yeah, here you go Chuck, maggots for sale!
www.kijiji.ca/v-fishing-camping-outdoor/city-of-toronto/live-bait-nightcrawlers-waxworms-maggots-ice-fishing/1236568969

If that doesn't work just call Queens Park or pry a Liberal off your wallet and place it on your leg.

Hope you feel better soon....

Thanks guys for all the concern.. Not sure I am ready for the maggots, or leeches just yet.. I am supposed to have a wound specialist coming to see me at home on Tuesday.. So I am hoping for something good to start happening.. I am starting to lose my charming personality with this.. Summer is coming and it will soon be shorts time.. I can hardly wait..  I have been in a fair bit of misery with this damn thing.. Mostly at night sleeping .. If that wound touches anything through the night, I am awake instantly .. takes about an hr to settle down.. I have a mini Schnauzer that has a tendency through the night to crawl into bed with me.. and he will shuffle around till he finds a hole comfy for him . If I feel him jump in I can guard my leg , but sometimes I don't feel him until he is airborne form me tossing him out the window for jumping on my leg.. Well not exactly but He can sure give me a big hurt.. if he jumps over me to get between my legs.... So we will see what Tuesday brings.. Then in the hospital on Wed to have a lump removed from my throat.. Getting old sucks.. but better than the alternatives at this point..

Jeez Chuck. That still looks horribly painful. Are these pics above new or the others from the original post ?

You should be Break-dancing again by now I'd think !

I have a Doctor buddy that works in the DFW Hospital in Texas. They look into and deal with weird stuff.

Is it OK I send him these pics ?

They are very recent pics. Was with Chuk at Dennis's funeral, and asked him about the leg. He told me about the pain, and not healing.

You know Clint Eastwood and Sylvester Stallone both cauterized wounds with gun powder!

www.youtube.com/watch

Rambo was a bit of a pussy about the whole thing in my opinion, I'm sure you would do better!

Stay strong, stay positive, you'll get through this! Laughter is the best medicine!

slight update on the wound.. The specialist was here on Tuesday and they did an ultra sound on my legs, and blood presure test on my leg.. The good news is they say my legs have good cirulation and the wound shold be healing. they say my old body is in good shape and should be capable of healing.. They wrapped a special membrane material that they use for burn and gunshot wounds. I have to leave it on for i week and they will be back to remove and examine the wound again to see if we are getting some improvement.. I can't tell if it is working.. All I know at this point is the fking pain is affecting my warm, charming personality.. After so long putting up with this .. I am going nuty. so I sure hope this will work..

Then yesterday I had to go into the hospital for some throat sugery. I had a tumor in my throat that they removed yesterday and they say they got it all so there should be no problem in the future. It's a little sore . kind like a skeeter bite compared to my leg..I feel like an old field car getting restored.. I hope another month or 6 weeks and all this is behind me.. I have more than enough to do right now just looking after Diane.. Working on building that 50 pickup for my Son.. and my coupe needs a weeks work of spring refreshing for summer  cruising..

Jeeze-Louise Chuk thats all making you look pretty tough , the fella that said our "Golden Years" are the best years of our lives was a lyin' son of a so&so I spent the last 5 years or so looking after all my PM's so I wouldn't have to deal with this kind of crap when I retire and have to deal with my sick spouse full time . And as far as the doctors are concerned 4 months is a real stretch if a fellow got service from a garage like that they'd be fired ; with all the medical advancements the quacks should be able provide better diagnosis/results . Be persistant Chuk "the squeaky wheel gets the grease " and take care of yourself in the meantime .

Well, Chuk, I sure hope that this is the last of all this BS, and that you finally heal well and fast. BTW, I also noticed that you have a couple nose hairs that need trimming. Keep your stick on the ice

grumpy is on the money with, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease ", chuck. i went through a bad f/up after my wife passed, about 13-14yrs ago, when i smashed a hip and spent about 6 months in the hospital on and off for a year with a bone infection. i can't remember how many fruit baskets and flower arrangements i bought for the nursing stations apologizing for my xxx rants about the pain i was in but they caught on eventually. don't be shy bud.
good luck buddy.

Sorry I have absent from the board for a spell , I do check in a couple times a day.. just to make sure there is no trouble.. I had several issues of my own that has kept me busy.. Besides my never ending leg wound. It is constantly wearing me down with pain on a scale of 1 to 10 my pain most of the time is a steady 50..and it just eats up my warm charming personality.. It never stops hurting for months now.. They are saying I should have it almost healed by April 22.. is the last date for my treatment in their book..

Then I had a tumor in my throat that I had to get out. They say they got it all and there should not  be any issue.. The pain from that is like a skeeter bite compared to my leg..

Then last night just after I got nicely  to sleep my wife wakes up to tell the toilet is overflowing..Holy crap the septic tank was plugged with a root in the line between the house and the tank.. So I worked my butt off last till nearly 3 am to get most of it cleaned up,  It backed up into the shower, I had to fill 3 tote boxes with stinking sewer water.. so the pump would just keep recycling and run all night.. what a friggen mess. Then when I went to check the rest of the basement it was running out the ceiling so it had soaked through around the laminate flooring and into the basement.. The rug is soaked and the under pad is a brownish color from sewer water from the septic tan .. I worked my butt off trying get my old girl to understand she could not use the toilet .. My whole last 20 hrs has been a trip to hell and back..

The good news is the septic pumper was here around 9 and we got the pooper working right  again, and them my insurance sent an adjuster and they said yes your covered for $25,000 gs.. That was nice to hear.. Usually is Sorry we don't cover that.. But he was great He had the guy they use for restoration of fire and flood damage.. He has called me and will here in the morning to get at it.. So I have the dirty stuff done so we can function with a bathroom and water, and they will take care of the basement damage.. It has been one thing after another for my this last little bit.. We will just working our through these until we lick them all.. Just keeps me plenty busy looking after a woman who does not understand what's going on around her,, and cooking and taking care of chit.. I will be glad to see some warm weather so I cam open some windows and I would like to get more time on my Sons truck I am trying to build.. I been getting my ass kicked pretty good this year.. But I will get through it.. It has stolen a lot time I usually have to spend here on the board.. I appreciate what a great group of guys we have here.. The board is always clean with no trouble.. I still get about 20 a day trying to get in here to make trouble but the board does have a good spammer blocking program so It has blocked several hundred from all those bad country's.. Thanks guys for keeping it green and friendly.. You are a great group..

A little update on my leg. I can't tell you just how painful this is.. I have Tylenol 3.. and percocets and they do not even touch the pain.. I have not slept through the  night for  for months.. I have to sleep on my back on the couch with that leg on the floor to slow the circulation to ease off the pain.. I have never endured pain like this.. I swear if I had a gun here I would blow my head off at times. the pain gets so bad.. And then I have Diane to look after and cook and wash.. the normal house work that never friggen ends..I am not a cook.. I have seen about 20 different medical people but nobody seems to able to get this under control.. I have to go in on Thursday for a bone scan and they tell it will three hours for that procedure and I am waiting now for a wound specialist to call. After I have the bone scan if I have not heard from the specialist I am going to London to emergency and tell them They are incapable of dealing with this injury in St.Marys or Straford.. all they ever do is clean the wound and put clean dressing on very other day.. Usually by 2am in the morning I am sitting here with a pair of scissors cutting all the dressing off because of the pain.. There has been more than I night I can tell that I wanted to just go get in the car and take a transport on head first.. The f-ing pain is unbearable most time.. and it sure has taken a toll on my warm charming personality.. I feel like sawing the barrel off my 22 rifle and bringing it with me to the Drs.. so I can show him what unbearable pain is.. lol...These are pictures I took this morning as  where it is located I can't see it with out pictures.. They had it wrapped with a zinc coated wrap.. but again I could not stand the pain so after about 4 to 5 hrs I have to cut it off because of the pain..I am sorry I have not been able to here to much right now looking after the house and Diane and dealing with this wound.. I just had a tumor out that I had in my throat and it;s went fine no pain to speak of .. More like a skeeter bite compared to my leg.. I feel bad that I don't get as much time here right now.. I always check in a couple times every day in case anybody has a problem or some maintenance needs doing and to block all the spam we have been having the last couple months.. I am blocking about 20 spammers per day trying to get into the forum . Thanks for the support .. God I hope this under control soon.. Summer is not far and with 5 acres I have lots of out side clean up and yard work to get done.. So I sure they get this fixed soon.. I am about at the end of my tolerance right now.. I am quick to get Po'ed and short on humor right now..If any body needs anything.. just PM me or call me I can and I am willing and able to make any corrections or chages or help anybody with any board issues.. I hope to have this fixed or under control soon.. so I can back to life... Thanks for your concern and patience..

PICT0358.JPGPICT0359.JPGPICT0360.JPG

Every time they try to put this wrap on I can only stand it for about 6 hours and I can't take that pain anymore so I have to cut it off.. If anything touches it even my sock or pant leg of my pants.. The pain goes from a solid 10 to 100 in in a mili second.. I have never had pain like this thing..

That looks incredibly painfull I didnt even know you were dealing with such a bad wound!

I wonder if they make or if you could make something to bridge the area over that wound and like medical tape it on kinda thing. Almost like a box so everything around that wound has 1 inch of space to get proper air circulation, but not touch your leg. Little aluminum thing riveted together with some holes for air kind of thing that contours the leg so its sturdy but light... But I dont know how far your pain spreads on the leg...

If its allowed I would try it but youve probably thought of somehing like that already...

Regardless, hope it gets better for you soon...

I don't know how you do it Chuk. That looks really nasty and painful. I am not a doctor or anything but to my eye that looks to be worse in the last series of pics than what you first showed. I would take a trip to London to Emerg sooner than later. If its like that after 4 + months you should be getting a different opinion. I hope it starts to improve and you can get back to a somewhat normal routine.

chuck, i am with 51 on this thing looking worse since your first posting to this thread on feb. 18/17. up till your last post yesterday i didn't realize you haven't been to london with this situation.

"They are incapable of dealing with this injury in St.Marys or Straford.. " and if  "I have Tylenol 3.. and percocets and they do not even touch the pain." is where this is at you have a serious problem chuck. both the 3's and the percs are maintenance drugs for the healing process and this thing isn't healing, obviously. chuck, i have been in a similar situation with my hip some yrs ago, belleville hosp vs kingston univ teaching hosp and/or st. mary's- straford hosp vs london unvi teaching hosp. there is 2 ways to get there and i have done both of them, i asked to go to no avail, or just go to emerg in london. when you just show up at london emerg you will be treated shoddily because you weren't referred, they will run some tests, patch you up, give you a drug that "will" take the pain away and be sent back. they will not over step each other without a referral. i couldn't believe it but it showed belleville i was serious about another opinion. i was then referred back and it was another world of care.

chuck you have to demand to go there for another opinion not just ask them buddy. the way this is going you will eventually get to london, maybe/hopefully, but it will be to save your life/leg not fix it.

IMG_0842.JPG

this is a pic of an x-ray on the first hip repair after my fall. it's about 10-11" long and the big bolt is in my hip ball, then the infection set in. i was begging them chuck to cut my leg off to stop the pain before i got referred to kingston after the emerg walk in didn't work.

Oh my god. That hurts just looking at it.

I would be headed to a big medical facility in Toronto (TGH) and straight to emergency. You have to get this sorted, do not take no for an answer. Take control of the situation, no one should have to go through this much pain. This looks absolutely dangerous to me now.

Are you in the car yet?

I am thinking like that.. I have never been in so much pain.. This pain has been making me crazy.. night after night, after night.. Going on four months now.. I have tylenol 3s.. they do nothing, then I had percosets , they do nothing. Now hydro morphine 2mg.. been on these for three days nothing  for the pain non of these have helped me with this pain and my leg keeps getting worse. The pain keeps getting more and more intense until the front end of a transport is looking good some nights.. I seem to have the worst pain at night.. I have sat up many nights with my head in my hand in so much pain I wish I could just friggen die.. The pain is intolerable.. I have been to emergency on three separate  nights, Seen 4 or 5 Drs with this new stupid system we have you end up in some clinic. This pain has been making it hard to know the difference between insanity and reality some nights at 3 in the morning when your half crazy with PainI can't tell day from night.  I go again Monday for nothing.. I hope to see a specialist next week.. I have seen him once and my foot is so swollen he thought he should put it in wrap to get the swelling down.. That lasted till about 1 am and I had to cut it off. I can't stand the pain.. They have to get this pain under control before they can wrap it.. my foot is twice the size of normal.. The pain has been merciless for a month now.. Thats why I have been unable to be on here guys.. With Diane and trying to care for her. I have some some days I am near at the end of what I can take anymore.. Minutes feel hours and hours feel like days and the nights are indescribable pain..and feel like weeks.. I am sure hoping for a break soon.. It feels similar to somebody holding a blow torch to my leg and I am unable to get my leg away from it.. Something has to give soon.. I feel like jumping off the barn roof.. It has been a long grind.. of pain like I never felt before..

Chuck

That looks absolutely terrible .I hate to tell people what to do .

But I think you need to get Diane up to your daughters place and get to a major hospital in London or Toronto and get yourself looked after, before you are unable to look after her yourself .You need immediate attention to that leg before you find yourself having it removed .

Chuck make a decision to do it and do it soon

I,m with 33 Chuck. The redness and swell ing seems to be getting worse and the pain isn't easing off any. You need immediate help with that leg at a real hospital. our health system sucks with what we have to go through to see a specialist. If it was me I would pick a good hospital and camp out and raise hell till they did something.

Chuk, I going to ride the wagon as well. Dianne will be confused for sure. Is there someone that can take care of her for a few days. Your leg is getting worse for sure. never seen anything like that but I am no medical person. For sure it is infected with something. I am praying for you but for sure a bigger hospital or something. your GP won't help you?

I have been telling him for a while now to go to London but I do know it is easier to give advice than take advice and he knows I will support him what ever he decides and will help him with what ever he wants

cry

Ive been following your progress or lack there of.😢 I've not said to much but....

I could cry just seeing the situation your in. I can't imagine being in that kind of

pain for so long and still have to keep everything's else going and take care of Diane.

If it is an option to get your daughter involved to look after Diane while you get yourself to

London hospital you need to consider that asap my friend.

when you consider your other option (  just keep going the way you are )

The choice or options most likely will be out of your control. And do not have a good outcome For you, Diane or your family.

Your in my thoughts and prayers all the time, and not to be an ass..... but I've probably used up a lot of good karma

praying for an affordable hydro bill and a fast ( but very painful) end to Winnie the shrew, there might not be enough left over to help you get better.

Xoxoxo

please hang in there!

Please tell us you are on your way to get help.

Your physical state is a huge concern but your capacity to think things through is going to continue to diminish with the pain. There is only so much you can do on your own.

As others have said if you don't get it sorted now your ability to look after your loved ones is going to diminish very quickly.

My concern for you is genuine, your situation is heartbreaking.

I will add my opinion that you do definitely need to seek competent medical attention.it is easier said than done I realize as you are only a number that they want to dispose of and get back to whatever they consider important to them.I know you are concerned for Diane but you need to get that taken care of or you will leave her alone you must know that a lot of us are worried about you.

the problem with doctors is that like I tell my doctor they are mechanics that deal in bodies.on the subject of doctors ever hear of one failing to be certified? they get their ticket wether they graduate first or last I would hope mine was in the top 10.as I said they are like mechanics how many good ones do you know or hear about?hopefully you get one of the top 10.

mother -ucker chuck.
chuck, if you don't demand something done about this now you won't like the outcome as the so-called med system will step in and it will be to their format for both you and diane, period. i have been down a somewhat similar road and it will never/ever happen again to me in this lifetime. p.m. sent

That was going to be my next question. Anyone live close enough to help him out, either with the leg or Diane. Time for an intervention.

ok up date Chuck has been seen by a Doctor in Stratford hospital. Things are starting to sound more like they should of in November not now, they are going to place a I?V in him this afternoon a nurse will see him every 24hrs to keep up with the meds to clear up what we all figured an infection. After things get cleared up It is my understanding he needs an operation to rejoin an artery in his leg he is looking at about 6 weeks for this to take place. He is a tuff old bird for sure and good thing. The poor guy has had a lot of trouble this winter and has not lost his temper once I respect the fact that his wife is his number one concern witch in my book makes him a great guy. I was raised like that also as most of us were I suppose. Any one is welcome to pm me any time they have a question I will try to keep every one up to date thanks
