Wee bit of a hike on insurance renewal 😖
Permalink

So,  Insurance renewal time is here and there was a smidge of a hike for insurance on my vehicles.

like triple what I was paying.

when I finally got ahold of someone to find out why, it seems the information they have is that my 1 and only speeding ticket I received in last 20 yrs. ( got it in May2026) was for doing 70 kms in a 60 km zone.

fine was $25 and didn't lose any demerit points.

fine was paid and life goes on.

for some reason my insurance company is showing that the fine was for 90 km in a 60 km zone  so it look like I was doing 30 km over the speed limit.

im thinking somewhere down the line  whoever entered in the information missed took the seven for a nine??

So where do I start to try and straighten this mess out?

I do still have a copy of the original speeding ticket with all that information Thank god!

But of course nothing is open  MTO were license bureau wise to even start to get it straightened out .

im not paying $7800.00 per yr for insurance because of that screw up!

Any info on where to start / take original ticket and info in to show/ prove the mistake  and get this straightened out ASAP would be appreciated 😳

I would start by emailing your insurance company that picture and see where that gets you.

Oh definetmy plan on taking it in for them to view in person, but  I would imagine that will not be enough. I'm not sure where they would get the information of my driving record/abstract? I suspect that that's where the information is incorrect.

Im pretty sure it will be up to me to get it straightened out at that point first!

just kind of a heads up I guess. If I ever get another ticket, I'll have to dble check  Point of origin records to make sure they have documented the actual information correctly .

Hi Janice: Sort of an insurance issue for me also. I just got a notice last week from my insurance co of 35yrs.. First off they needed to add a fifty dollar charge to my policy for some kind of correction charge ??????WTF Then the following week they want to increase the policy on my coupe to $750.00 a year, and now they also require a new appraisal.. I only probably put 500 miles on my car last year.. Big changes in lifestyle.. I am seriously considering Haggerty at this point.. ANybody have anything good or bad to say about them.. This is freaking insane.. I have not had an accident or traffic ticket in over thirty years.. So what the hell is going on.. the liberal government is sleeping with all the insurance companies while they rip us off.How can it possibly cost that much.. those G()_Y*(T&*  (&T &)P*() H_[ a$$wipes..They are driving us out of the hobby.. That is getting insane for a car that I drive 3 months of the year with a perfect driving record.. Why do we never push back???  I am really getting annoyed about being a nice guy.. I really don't want to be a nice guy I would like to be a real A$$hole and go in to the office and turn some desks over just so they will get the point. I am fed up and I'm not gonna take it anymore!!!!!! .. so what am i gonna do?????confuse furious  furious furious furious furious furious furious furious  just drive with my own insurance and cover my own car.. I will create my own insurance company..just for me.. and make my own liability certificate.. They really know how to "P" iss a person off. There I feel better..

Insurance is out right getting ridiculous............... I had a hard time insuring my hobby vehicles this year. No one would touch my Pro Street truck outside of my regular insurance company and only liability..................... Forget about my Harley, I could not afford to insure with the increases last year. Perfect driving record with no tickets or accidents in thirty years.
The speeding ticket of Janice's above makes you think................ One ticket and your screwed. Think I will slow down on my way to work tomorrow.

Just want to clarify my issue.

when insurance company searched / printed off my driving record details, it is showing a ticket for doing 90 km in a 60 kms zone = 3 demerit point loss and min fine of $180.00

when in fact the actual ticket I received was for 70 kms in a 60 km zone = 0 demerit points/ lost and $25 fine

i printed off chart that reflects point loss and fine amounts for future reference so we can decide if punching it is worth it🙄

If I didn't notice/ question why the skyrocketing premium, I would have never known that somewhere, someone has entered the wrong info and I now have to find out when license beurea  open tomorrow who/ where and how I straighten this crap out and get my 3 demerit points back.... and then my previous rate!

I never thought to get a print out of my driving record or Arts, Mercedes for that matter to make sure info was correct.

When is the last time anyone else has?  Is your info current/ correct?

Has anyone ever ran into this exact problem or is this kind of sh*t just reserved special for me?no

I ensure 2 cars, a mini van and my truck year round.

the other 3 are just summer/ seasonal and stored for winter.

if I don't get this straightened out, I best be finding a pimped out bicycle.evileye

hopefully when everything is open tomorrow I can get it all straightened out.

Give Zehr Insurance a call, you might need an updated appraisal but they are good for 10 years with them, my rate with them is $260/year for 35K value. Must live right, my everyday insurance went down nearly $300 this year, added another vehicle last week and they didn't ask for any money for the winter storage coverage.

the insurance co is reacting to the info they received from the mto if i am reading this properly. at this point your beef is with the the mto to get clarification on the actual original ticket. the mto would of received their info from whatever local provincial court jurisdiction you are in and paid your fine to. humph !
- maybe, how about this which sucks because it wasn't your doing's but it will be up to you to show/prove different.

1- go to the local court with your copy and get a copy of their records pertaining to this offense. it will be on their letterhead and probably cost a couple of bucks.
2- get a current drivers abstract from the mto today on line and copy. another couple of bucks.
3- go to your insurance broker and get his copy of what the insurance co is saying they received from the mto to justify the increase.

- at this point you will see where the screw up occurred and then know at what level to step into to resolve it. the hard part will be keeping your temper under control until you have the documents to show at what part the screw up occurred. at whatever point of the screw up they aren't going to want to admit to it and if you are hot headed they will have ways to stretch this out on you. at the brokers i would arrange for a payment plan, a cheque today and 2 post dated ones, on the new policy because you do need insurance today and when it is cleared up it is better you still owe rather than they owe you a credit. keep your cards to your chest with a smile on at all levels until it is over even with the broker. it will get straightened out without your stepping in but it could take up to 1/2 a year of all their bureaucracy and you being completely pissed and if you step in it could take a couple of weeks and done.

- with insurance being mandatory it makes it their game not ours. if you needed tires or a new roof you have many-many choices, your game. with insurance you have maybe 1/2 a dozen and that's if they will take you. right or wrong it is their game and all of us need it if you want to drive. something i do every year is get an abstract of my drivers, myself included, with an abstract of my cvor a month before insurance is due to be renewed but an individual shouldn't have to do that.

   good luck janie

Ok, so mistake was made at City of North Bay provincial offences office.

They did in fact enter a 9 instead of a 7

Slim your chart/ info is correct. My driving record does  in fact show I have 4 demerit points.

North Bay provincial offences office is sending information to MTO with urgent tag on it to rectify the situation but that could take up to six weeks . I am having copy of document that is being sent to MTO admitting mistake at their end faxed to me to take with copy of actual ticket into my insurance office.I am doubtful that will help  and think that this mess will take a while to fix.

I will wait until I have received fax/ document admitting mistake before I make some calls to see which one of their employees will be my driver until this gets straightened out.

Wow!  I very well know people make mistakes. Things do happen but I didn't even get an apology.

Of course I need insurance! So I'll have to pull the extra $4g's out of my *ss  and pay it up front and then wait to get reimbursed LOL.

Another lesson learned I guess. You really just have to dble check everything.disbelief

no

Yes! It will be a case of " janienobum" I can't even laugh my *ss off.... I got nothin left.wink

But on a good note, I have spent most of Christmas holidays at hospital with my step dad ( I slept on a bench in his room Christmas Eve and he woke up at 2:00am to wish me merry Christmas😂)

He is actually looking like he is out of the woods and maybe coming home in very near future!

We had a family trip booked/ payed for to Panama for a week. my mom and step dad included . Supposed to leave on Jan 8th

I had resolved myself to the fact we would have to reschedule for later in the year  and that it was probable that my parents wouldn't be able to come . He is absolutely determined to go. And dr are saying if he continues to do well they see no reason why he can't go.

im just nervous if he ran into trouble while we were there that it would be a **** show. I'm just happy he is alive / recovering frankly.

He is one tough old dude. Lol

glad you found the origin of the problem and it is on the way to being straightened out janie. i would still try giving it/them the stall before going to this miracle bank of yours though. maybe a cheque today for last years amount and a post dated one 6 months out for the balance. when it does get settled just have it canceled and ask for the cheque back. better you are square or owe a little bit for the ticket than have them owe you a big bit and your pissed again waiting for their cheque at about the 90 plus day mark. thats just my thinking.
good for you on the fix

I was told my insurance would not cover my vehicle on a home hoist.. If anything happened .. car falls off or something to that it is not covered on the hoist.. Is everybody aware of that.. and If my car is on anybody's home hoist it is not covered.. I did not know that.. Did you???? confuse

I just talked to Zehr and was told there is no such thing as a hoist exclusion in their policies and that they had never heard of any such thing in the industry. Considering the number of ads seen in collector car magazines for hoists and the number of people that use a hoist to store their collector cars, this seems like a weird statement from Hagerty. Anybody else check with their insurer?

By the way, even though the values stayed the same on both cars, my rate went down this year. Not because of age or driving record etc. Never seen that happen in the insurance business before.

I was told that yesterday by the broker quoting my policy.. I am still waiting on the quote.. I will ask if that is in writing on the policy someplace..

edit by chuk ..

Re Hagerty insurance policy..

Now as to the hoist situation, once installed in a private garage there is no inspection.

Intact insurance for one will cancel midterm if they find out about the exposure.

It is always best to have it listed on the application so the insurer knows it is there.

Any commercial exposure is a standard exclusion in a homeowners policy!

When in doubt call your broker or agent and ask.

Ya, doesn't surprise me. And if your wearing yellow socks on a wed your not covered either😖

Just crazy!

I ended up moving all my car/ home insurance to a different company. New company was fine with the documents I had to prove mistake and  I actually got a better price than I did with my old insurance company that I have been with for 30+ years .

So Big old 🖕 To them. I'll give my money to someone that will actually give a tiny sh*t about what I need. But still a huge pain in the butt .

The value of the vehicles stayed the same but did you check the rest of the policy . the government mandated them to lower the rates so they lowered the coverage for injury... hospital care , rehab,  lost income. they will gladly raise it back to your original coverage for extra.

wow, 30 years is a long time. hope you shopped them every 4 or 5 years in that time as there are some big changes coming in that industry when the banks got into it. i got a big eye opener on the commercial insurance about 3-4yrs ago to the tune of about 45% less for apples to apples.
