I bought a DISSEL! 1997 Ford f350

Rod knock anyone?

Bought a 1997 F350 Dually Diesel. 7.3 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel. Way too overkill for anything ill ever need but whatever.

Has anyone ever driven one of these with no box on the back? My back still hurts...the leaf pack is about 10 inches thick.

Its dirty, old, but it has potential. Plan is to replace my current truck thats slowly losing power and dying. Its still a good truck, but its got its issues.

Plan is two tone(same style two tone as oem), black and red metallic in the middle. Flat deck in the back.

Low kms motor, only 240 000 on it. Needs a clutch. Found that out last night on our adventure home.

STORY TIME!

So we went to pick this thing up with a trailer. My truck would have broke, cus my dads truck didnt like it either...

My dads truck has no problem towing his house trailer with equal or more weight. Problem is, is that this stupid truck is so long and and

all the weight is in the front. So needless to say, when we drove it on the trailer, the rear wheels of my dads truck lifted right up off the

ground. Then when we got it on all the way, the truck was squatted 3/4 inch from the axle stops. So we didnt tow it.

Went home and contemplated things, said screw it, and went back to the truck with a tank of diesel and got my buddy to make a convoy.

Needless to say, drove this big hunk of steel home in a snow storm (everytime we get something or drive home illegally, it always snows).

My buddy drove ahead and my dad behind. he said i rolled black smoke all over him at first lolol

Clutch is bad, so I was looking for any gear that i could get into just to get going. The rear end is so stiff I dont think ill ever be able to drink coffee and drive again.

But we made it home no problem. Took it slow and had no trouble. 45 minute drive and no issues for a $1000 truck? Not bad...

Project will most likely start in the spring, but any thing I do to it ill update the thread. Gotta get working on the 68 Camaro...

f350 isn't that how you spell yearly inspections??

Good for you. Do you have a use for such a big truck??

Not really a use for it no. I do use my dads car trailer fairly often, and my current truck doesnt really like towing that well.

Also has a "cool factor", with it being so big and ugly. I like the bodystyle really. And I wanted to get back to standard transmission.

My first truck (ford ranger) had the 5 speed in it. Then the current truck came around and was a good deal, but was auto.

Do these have to be inspected yearly? Its being plated for personal use only, but even if it does, I keep my stuff in good condition. The previous owner
had it for 10 years and never had issues with the inspections.

Ben

I generally don't steal things from the other site to post here, but you had better read this.
www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/trucks/commercial-vehicle-faq.shtml
This truck looks like it cannot escape needing a CVOR and now it requires inspections, probably logs, a whole lot of fuel and a big licence fee.

Also, will it pass a safety with the body perforation and other issues?

The ontario government really makes it hard to figure out what they are saying. However, consider this excerpt from said link kindly provided by wuga (i was looking for this page myself, so thank you.)

Q15: Is my pickup truck a commercial motor vehicle and does it need a CVOR?
The Highway Traffic Act considers all pickup trucks to be commercial motor vehicles, but a pickup truck only needs a Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration (CVOR) certificate if it has an actual or registered gross weight of more than 4,500 kg.

A personal-use pickup truck means a pickup truck that:
1) is being used for personal purposes without compensation
2}has a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 6,000 kg (13,227 lb) or less, and is fitted with either:
a)the original box that was installed by the manufacturer, which has not been modified, or
b)a replacement box that duplicates the one that was installed by the manufacturer and has not been modified
3)is not carrying or towing a trailer carrying commercial cargo or tools or equipment of a type normally used for commercial purposes

(I added the numbers for clarification between copying and pasting from their site.)

Highlighted are 3 different points.

1) Registered gross weight of more than 4500 Kg. This, if you read further down in the article on the site, is the weight that is listed on the ownership permit. My owner ship puts their number at 2312Kg, so I pass there...

2) Has a Manufacturers gross vehicle weight rating of 6000Kg or less. Looked at the door sticker in my truck and the MGVWR is 10 000 Lbs or 4535Kg. Once again, I pass there.

3) The green area... This is the only spot i see them getting me... What is considered a "replacement box"? My plan is stake truck. Has not been modified... so are we saying that I need to "Pay myself, Ben Davis, Fabricator at Slabs Shop to build a flatbed for Ben Davis' truck (Me being the manufacturer, and then not modify it from there"?????

They really make this junk confusing... But I am within limits for weight. What do you think? I have pictures for proof lol

The previous owner had it plated commercial because it was a welding truck and used it for business, but he said the had the option not to plate it as such, but would have been illegal for him to use it like he was doing if he had the personal transportation only sticker

EDIT!

Then we go to another section of their website, and all thats listed is

Commercial vehicle safety

A commercial motor vehicle is:

  • a truck or highway tractor with a gross weight or registered gross weight of more than 4,500 kilograms (kg)
    OR
  • a bus with a seating capacity for ten or more passengers

you should be ok with a stake box because you can buy them original with a flat deck. i have had probably close to 8 of them trucks, 550-650's, with reefer box's with that motor and they were great. i still have my 2000 f350 crew cab dually bought new with about 270,000 k's and wouldn't think of parting with it. the work trucks would get 500,000 k's on them with usually just a complete injector change at around the 350 to 400k mark and a couple of high pressure oil lines replaced for the turbo. the cabs usually started falling apart and the power train was still running strong. there is a big lawsuit going on now over the motor they replaced that one with, 6 or 6.2 ?? i bought a new 2006 550 and got rid of it at just below 200k. eight injectors one at a time under warranty, 2 turbo's all under warranty and then it dropped 2 roller lifters. last ford truck i have bought since.
a couple of thing's to ponder, if you have to replace an injector at some point, do the other 3 on the same side while the cover is off. i also found over the years if you have to do one the others aren't far behind. i found by the time you got down to the 4th injector one at a time it was frustrating and expensive. while the cover is off i would put in glow plugs also. the cover gasket was about 120 bucks back then. if you find it hard to start cold check the solenoid on the top front of the motor to make sure it is working properly before you figure its glow plugs. being a welding truck it probably has a lot of idle hours on it as they usually leave them running a lot in the winter and that could bring the km's down before injectors.
you got a good deal if it checks out ok. it should be the last truck you buy for towing with only 240 k on it, i hope mine is. lol that would of been a rough ride home for sure.

Thanks a lot for the clarification. This thing has had a new starter installed just before he parked it. He has done the glow plugs and freeze plugs on the heads, and he gave me a bunch of them too so i have spares. Dont know if he has done injectors or not. Everything looks pretty good.

Thanks for the information about the injectors etc... Ill keep up on the maintenance and it should be a really good truck for me! As far as I know, the 6.0L powerstrokes are crap unless you remove the junk like EGR some emissions crap then they are supposed to work good. But removing the stuff is expensive too. The 7.3L is far superior thats for sure.

As of right now, I can get new fenders for 100 each, and cab corners for probably 30 each, so ill probably be buying those. Passenger side took some sort of hit so we will fix the body over there properly. Body work is not an issue for us. As far as mechanically, on the drive home, brakes worked great. I was surprised how touchy and how well they worked. Very similar to my ranger. It needs the 1/8th inch cable to re connect the e brakes, clutch (converting to single mass flywheel while im at it. Kit is pretty cheap), a filler neck from the wreckers, and the flat bed. Everything else checks out. Goal is to get it on the road with the flat deck for around $2000 painted and nice again. Ill be looking for some new seats too cus that bench is horrible... Then, ill try and sell my current truck for $2000 and call it a day.

sounds like he looked after it. that's reasonable pricing on the parts, there's a lot old fords still on the road. i like that body style compared to today's look. i'm not a dedicated ford guy but that power train is hard to beat. if you can get it on the road finished for that number you are a big winner, good for you. there is still the odd deal out there if your not in a hurry and you look hard enough

Nice start. My 2500HD duramax weighs in under the 4500K but still heavy and about 185$ a year no yearly inspections. It is all personal use and mostly used to tow our 5th wheel TT. I asked about lowering the weight but was told what is on the door is what it is.

Just an update, got truck in my name. No special CVOR needed or any other expenses than a normal truck because it's for personal use. I'll get the same red sticker my current truck has on my plate, and the truck is subject to a visual etest to make sure it's not blowing a bunch of black smoke, which it doesn't when it's warmed up.

Had to postpone work on the Camaro project and get this big pile of junk done. Worse than we thought to say the least. Truck got smacked pretty hard on the passenger side. Rocker panel and floor are crunched in a bit, someone put a new door on and the back pillar is filled with bondo and messed up pretty good. Not getting too too fancy with this thing, but still trying to do it right.

Thing was absolutely filthy, so first step was to gut interior including dash to find any mouse smell and eliminate it. Whole inside got lysoled. Looked much better untill I started sanding and body work. PAtched rad support in the front first thing. Then moved on to the floor panels. Going to start and hopefully get a rocker done today, but im on my own for the day aside from advise/direction. Bought some ford mustang bucket seats too and fabbed up the rails to make them work.

Knocked about 40LBs of crunchys off the frame. all looks good no rot on the frame its still really thick.

Truck will look good when its done. Found out that the flywheel is shot and will have to do a single mass flywheel conversion and new clutch disk etc to go along with it. That should be it, unless the synchros are destroyed and then ill be stuck double clutching till I get over the truck.
