A friend asked if they could sell their early 80's Firebird at our place. A young fella bought it but asked the female owner " can you please drive it to my house for me, I can't drive a manual yet...."

HEY, I resemble that remark  LOL

I'm a boomer and about 10 yrs ago bought a Jeep YJ and asked the guy to drive it to my place. hmm

I attempted many times up and down my street but could go no further than about 10 ft before stalling it each time. Funny though, I could drive it in reverse no problem.

Had one of my neighbours drive it into my backyard were it sat for a year before I sold it. doh  doh

My first car I bought was a standard. Dad drove it home for me. To save some money it went under there insurance. Dad said he would only do it once I learn to drive it. We had a long driveway so I spent the next few days going up and backwards on the driveway until I could do it perfectly. Then he insured it and on the road I went.

Frank there is still hope for you!!

I got this in my junk mail today from Hagerty. Looks like they want young people to learn to drive a standard trans.

Greetings Classic Car Owners,

The Hagerty Driving Experience is a program launched by Hagerty in 2011 to teach young drivers to operate manual transmission vehicles and to ignite a passion for classics. Since that time, Hagerty has hosted 21 events throughout the U.S. and Canada teaching more than 700 young drivers the skill of operating a manual transmission vehicle and introducing them to the joy and excitement of the classic car hobby. Our next Hagerty Driving Experience will take place at the Caledonia Fairgrounds in Caledonia, ON, on Saturday, August 27th!

We couldn't have done it without friends like you! We are looking for enthusiastic car owners interested in helping teach young drivers the skill of driving a manual using cool, classic cars.

If you have a manual transmission classic and would like to join us to help fuel the future of the classic car community, please contact Andrew Count at 416.346.2353 or email youthprograms@hagerty.com.

Program basics:

  • Conducted on a closed driving course with approximately 40 students
  • Focuses on clutch operation and teaching the unique ins-and-outs of classic cars
  • Program is free of charge
  • Two sessions: 9 a.m. – Noon and 1 – 4 p.m.

Additionally, for students interested in participating, registration is now open atwww.Hagerty.com/DrivingExperience. Open to drivers ages 15 to 25 with a valid permit or driver's license. Sign up soon as space is limited and pre-registration is required.

This is an opportunity you won't want to miss!

Happy Motoring!

 TMJ,

That hope went out the window a little over 25 years ago. LOL biggrin

I be a bit too old for the program.

That is a good thing they are doing but who in their right mind would allow these kids to drive their classic?
