Henry: My experience and suggestion is to post your bid for the amount you are willing to pay . E-bay will increase your bid accordingly until it reaches your maximum bid.. Walk away from your computer.. Don't look at it again until the listing is finished you will get a notice from e-bay.. The worst thing to do on e-bay is watch the bidding and getting emotional as it narrows.. e-bay will only bid your offer in increments to up the bid you need till it reaches your max bid..Good luck

I had the son a buddy of mine bid on a complete package of trim for me. What he does in the last few minutes of the auction he looks at it. He puts in his bid which is enough to beat the highest bid. In the last 10 seconds or less he hits send. The other person that thought he had it doesn't have time to counterbid.

Problem with that is, there are tons of programs that do that and a lot of people out there using them.
It is a desired item, I bet the snipping apps are being used.
Henry,
As Chuk said, place the highest bit that you want to pay and then walk away. You win bonus..
I do this with a couple of local auction sites for tools and hardware stuff.

Actually, I used to snipe and your final bid is made in less then the last second. Even snipe outbids snipe. If the item is really desirable and has lots of bidders, snipe or a similar program will win. Depending on the speed of your computer and service, 10 seconds will never get the bid there. There is getting to be so much of everything on EBAY, that you have a pretty good choice of prices. If you really want it, 'buy it now' or the odds are you won't get it.
Thanks all, Bernice and I have a max US amount in mind to keep it within our max Canadian $. Will watch and see what the bid gets up to then I put in my max bid the day before the auction's end.

that would be your best and safest way to go about it i would think. i use to buy a fair amount of stuff of e/bay some years ago but not so much anymore. now if it something i need or think i do i pretty much hit the buy it now button if it is close to what i figure is fair and that usually boils down to what it is and how bad you want/need it . short of that just put in a bid to the max you want to pay and go for a couple of beers and forget about it. if it is getting a lot of action who is to say the seller isn't upping the bid himself til the end and then coming back to the last legit bid saying the winner didn't have the money or etc and you win if you want it. i know for a fact that scenario plays out with some guys selling old bike parts.

I've done it both ways.. Waited for the very last few seconds.. Won and been out bid. I've also just bid my very very best offer and walked away and have won and been out bid. Good luck!
