Speaking of tint.. CBC radio was saying today after July 1st the OPP will be going after people they think have tint that's darker than they like. It's the officers discretion with no way to argue. $110.00 fine.

There has to be a measurement of darkness. Personal opinion wouldn't hold up in court. It would be tossed out of court in a heart beat.

Most shops doing safety inspections received a hand held meter a couple weeks ago to measure tint darkness, no longer a judgement call.

No shop in my area has received and guns to measure window tinting..Nor have we been notified by the MOT about anything. I am a certified inspection station and have heard no such thing as of to-day....nor have I been informed by any official about any changes to either safety inspections , nor Have we been issued any new forms of any kind and I just got my order of some new safety books same as the old ones.. No information about any changes ?????

Window tint is sold with the rating on it. 35%, etc.

I was in the local dealership talking to a mechanic friend when the service manager brought the meter out to him, small unit the size of a cell phone in a hard plastic protective case. Chuck, maybe your on Orville's blacklist??

Chuck all Inspection stations up our way were notified of the upcoming changes months ago. The MTO has had seminars several time for inspection stations and their techs. Don't know where you live in Ontario but it is also on line as well. It may be with checking out prior to Friday. Saturday everything changes arrrgh!

It is my understanding that the change has been pushed off until October,

due to the aftermarket people challenging the new rules .

but I having my 33 and 34 CHEV safetied this week anyway

Stopped into a friends shop this afternoon to get the details, as others have said there have been information sessions at the colleges already, YOU need to order the new forms, tinted glass meter, etc. The form is in duplicate( old carbon copy), one copy to the customer, the other copy you must keep on file for a year. Comes into effect July1, no extensions

Just kind of weird.. I have about 4 shops within a 4 to 5 mile range and Not one of us heard anything from the ministry . I am not really surprized in a way as I have been a certified Safety inspection station for over 30 years and not once in thirty years have I ever had a visit from anybody from the MOT to look at my books or anything .. I just order my books when I need them and they come in the mail I do have to sign for them but never had a visit, and have no official notice from them about anything. I do not do tinting so I guess it is not safety related so it would be of no concern to me. Nor will I do anything different about safety's until the MOT sends me something. I just got a couple new safety books the first week of June. Same as the old books and nothing included in the package about any changes...I find that weird Where I live is weird , I have to have e-tests done on my vehicles , just a couple houses down the road from me is highway 7 any body on the other side of the highway is exempt. Nobody around here is even talking about any changes..I am only aware of the changes because of the forum..

I don't think there is anything new here. Just sounds like they're looking to enforce it more.

However using a meter doesn't make any sense. They're going to have to ammend the HTA I would think, because it doesn't specify a number.

(3) No person shall drive on a highway a motor vehicle on which the surface of the windshield or of any window to the direct left or right of the driver’s seat has been coated with any coloured spray or other coloured or reflective material that substantially obscures the interior of the motor vehicle when viewed from outside the motor vehicle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 73 (3).

Even though HTA doens't specify a % but I believe there's a general max darkness most tint shops unofficially adhere to for front drivers and passenger windows. (At least that's what I remember being told when I got windows on a reg cab truck tinted but that was about 15 years ago).

But the HTA is pretty clear that it's up to officer to decide if he feels it's too dark or not.

Well seeing how my original post made a big turn days ago and never returned I might as well join in too. There has to be some sort of benchmark to go by. A police officer's personal discretion,,,,I can't understand how that would hold up. There has to be something scientific as far as the measurement goes. That's like getting a ticket for speeding with no gauge of how fast you were going. His mufflers were loud with no db reading. You can be ticketed for anything but it has to be proven in court. This is so typical of our government don't make it cut and dried. As far as my window tint goes, I don't really like window tint on a old car. The car I'm talking about needs something though. On a long trip especially driving away from the sun it's pretty bad. We have actually had to put a towel behind us to limit the sunburn in our neck area.

Some OPP cruisers have factory tint, that's darker than my a$k . Even our town cops have a new Ford SUV with windows darker than you know who!

Can we bill the Province for incomplete services etc.

There has to be some young smart Lawyer than can make a case.

But what's the purpose of a meter without an accompanying acceptable value range in the HTA?

Thanks for posting the link. Now the next thing that comes into play just like a radar/laser gun is when was the meter last certified?? I would think it has to be labeled with a dated certification sticker on it. Actually the next video looks interesting too I'll have to watch it later.

ps - I wouldn't be too discouraged from getting a modest tint done. I'm sure the tinter will recommend what's generally acceptable for the front.
I doubt you're gonna get hassled. Just my opinion.

From what I understood from the CBC link I posted.. The cop said Ontario has no way to check how dark the tint is other than looking at it. Quebec does, but it's not used in Ontario and it will be up to the officer.

The way I heard it was....a cop approaching your car has to be able to see inside.
Back when...only the driver's door had to be clear. Light tint is OK.

Regulation 611, the new Ontario safety standards is a part of the HTA, believe the act would be updated to reflect the current changes since the act was written 26 years ago
