Want to get some opinions on soldering. Do you use a soldering gun or iron? I have a small butane flick torch but I seem to burn the wire when I use it. I mostly use an iron but it's a small one. The last gun I had didn't work very well either. What is the iron or gun of choice? Brand of solder and paste that you have had most luck with. Mainly my soldering is on car and trailer wiring.
I solder very little wiring. I usually strip back to a good spot for appearance and use crimp on connectors. I have a top quality tool for the connectors. When I do solder I use a Weller gun that I have had for about 45 years,, similar to the picture. I know at Fox Auto Sound (the local 12volt specialist) they solder everything.
ME too Mike. But I use a small butane torch. Bigger jobs I have 4 different size irons. I can't stand there problems crimp ons cause. I apprenticed under a genius(no KIDDING) at a cab company in Windsor. If he ever saw a crimp fitting…..well needless to say it would get ripped out and you were told to start over

What's the secret to using a butane torch ? Thought I have the heat low enough but wire seems to burn and solder won't stick...

Sounds like crappy solder or dirty wire. If it's not shiny copper looking, clean it with some scotch brite. Get solder from an electronics store. Finer the better. Make sure it's rosin core.
GMDad.
Point the flame away from the wire and heat the fitting. Heat will conduct through the fitting and heat the wire enough to run the solder. AND yea please buy your solder at an electronics shop. It comes in a tube about a 1/2" dia. coiled up like a spring.

No fitting. I was joining 2 wires back together. I usually bare the coating and then twist the wires together and apply low heat but don't think I have flux core solder. I am using the one from the electronics shop in the 1/2" tube coiled up.
Thats the complete wiring harness for the early pan AKA Slim its complete . the 42 and the 64 need some sheet metal because I don't like what came with them . and I probably could Build one or two more with the stuff kicking around . lot easier then hoarding car parts.
