Of the many household duties I've had to take over the past few years , the purchase of food ....and keeping costs reasonable....has been a challenge . Unless you've been living under a rock , or are wealthy enough to not really give a rat's behind , the price of meat , fruit , veggies etc has skyrocketed .
I've done the house brand and no name thing with some success but still..........then a friend mentioned FRESHCO which is affiliated with the Sobey's food chain . Just went today in Windsor and was expecting a cut-rate style dumpy store . Wrong . Nice place and the prices that are deemed " sales prices " at other stores are the regular price at Freshco and THEN they have their sale prices .
Others have suggested Costco but I'm not driving an extra 20 miles and paying for a membership card every year . No way Jose .
So , see if you have a Freshco near by to check out . I'm not implying you'll be eating steak regularly but it will save you some bucks ! You can probably check their weekly flyers on-line to get some ideas .

Lol finally something I can contribute to with confidence! Freshco will price match for 1 cent less too. If you go through your flyers and something you want at another store is cheaper, bring that flyer with you when you shop. Walmart is really good too if you have a superstore in your area. Nobody likes to hear "coupons" but I diligently use them and save a lot. If you're not used to it it takes some time, but once you get organized and start seeing the returns you get pretty excited.lol When I was across the border picking up Snoopy's parts I stopped at Aldi's, I was staring at the eggs....a lady said are you getting eggs I said at 75 cents a dozen I guess so...she looked at me weird and I told her how much they were here. I picked up 2 jugs of milk for 1.78.... I won't make a special trip, felt a little guilty not supporting Canada, but it was nice to get a little break. Just don't understand how there can be such a price difference.
I shop at Aldi's every week. can't beat their prices on cereal, milk, eggs and a lot of other items. They are a large chain of grocery stores all across Europe and the US. What I like is that they carry a lot of German delicacies normally only available at a deli.........
As for local veggies and such we have Lococo's just down the street, they are a supplier to the grocery stores and the store is the same as it was in 1903................large wooden crates and lots of fresh stuff. They also have a new store on Barton st in Hamilton.........great buys if you are near there.

You mentioned Wal Mart for food shopping. Here in Niagara its $1.00 to rent a shopping cart, at the Fort Erie store they charge .05 ea for plastic bags and then theres the not going to accept Visa thing. The food prices here aren't much different than Zehrs unless you shop sale items and their veggies aren't that great either. That could be due to the way they are handled, (mishandled) when restocking. Freshco is better and some prices are good. Its just like anything else, you have to know your prices when shopping. I spend time reading the flyers and shop accordingly.
The wife doesn't carry coupons but has an app her phone, think its called Flip and all you do is look up a product and will tell you where its cheaper. She marks the product and then gets to cash and pulls it up. Have been doing Freshco for a couple years now.

I love that place...................... Being new to the area, it's hard finding the local spots like this (so many in the Niagara area compared to where we came from). I take a number, have a sub made every Tuesday and grab my vegetables for the week on my lunch break. The place is always packed to the rafters............................ Rhys.
Thanks for the tip on the price matching , Janice , good to save even a few more pennies .I don't go to the United States of Guns and Drugs .....Detroit is a place I avoid . Even if prices are cheaper , you have to factor in gas to and from , fares both ways and 34% exchange .....not worth it for me to possibly be dodging bullets as well ....my false bravado days are long gone .

Girl after my heart lol If she's into coupons suggest she check out an app called Checkout 51. You check it before you go shopping then when you get back you take a picture of your receipt and upload it. If you have purchased the items you get money banked. When you get to 20 dollars you can ask for your cheque. I just started using it, so I haven't reached 20 yet, but eh, if it works it's 20 bucks.
I'm fortunate to have some great farms near by I can get eggs and veggies from. A flat of large eggs is only $6 on my way home from work.
There's a lot of crap you can cut out of your diet that will help you save a lot of money too. I use very little to no condiments, I drink mostly water, no pop rarely drink juice. I eat the fruit in stead of drinking it. Snacks can add up to a lot of money real quick. I just try to eat real food for the most part. (pizza is a major weakness however)
I actually saw a commercial on tv last night where they literally advertized "We make Food made from real food" I wish I could remember what it was for... I can't believe that's now a selling feature for food!
I also was reading the comment section on a food related article I read and some of the comments from on particular outraged person stuck with me, something along the lines of "they make our food unhealthy these days, they should be forced to make healthy food again".
There should be very little manufacturing involved in your diet in my opinion. Food shouldn't be made (baking at home aside) It's more or less just grown or raised then eaten.
Our daughter shops at Freshco and we shop there when in Carleton Place. She does the coupon shopping and they honor all but Walmart, this my have changed. If someone wants to eat healthier they just have to look at where they can get the food, just have to pay more most of the time. The farm next to us is 100% organic etc.
