Why are the bottoms of the caps ground off? This is a low mileage engine that was rebuilt/freshened by a machine shop in London. The engine works fine other then oil leaks. Was this engine balanced is that why the caps have been ground off? They are all ground off a different amount except one which looks like it wasn't ground. It was done with I would have to guess was a belt sander. In my opinion was nicely done but why.
It's pretty obvious the engine has been apart .. All the rod caps are marked and I would say all the rods have been weighed and ground for weight for sure..and they sure look like that engine was balanced..

TMJ, The rod that doesn't look like its been ground was the lightest rod (on the large end) and the rest were ground to match the weight. It would be interesting to see if they weight matched the smaller ends.
Thanks for the input guys. I'm not going to tear it down any further so I don't think I will ever know about the wrist pin end. I pulled it and tore it down to this point just to seal up the oil leaks. Actually the trans leaks were the main problem especially the front seal. I agree with your theory Bruce. The engine was rebuilt/freshened up about 1990 or so by BH&P in London.
