28-29 Ford Speedometer rebuild
Permalink

I picked up a speedometer a few weeks ago but pretty stiff, grease is hardened up inside so I need to disassemble and clean it up and hopefully put it back together!

I have to press off the bevel gear that drives the main shaft still so I can clean out the main shaft - it's the main problem.

One thing I'm not sure about is there's a horizontal shaft that is driven by the main shaft and it drives the numbers. It has bronze bushings on either side - they popped out when I took it apart but I can't figure out how they stayed in place? Would they have just been lock tite'd in place?? the small bushing is close to the casing so I don't think I can come out but the larger bronze bushing can. They don't seem to press in and there's no clips or pins or anything I can see.

I have a speedometer from a 28/29 Model A that has been dismantled and would be a great source for parts. I also have a brand new glass lens and gasket set for this speedometer. You can have the whole works for $10.

Awesome thanks! That had the answer to the questions about holding the bushings - they drill and tap a hole to make a set screw on the one side.

All disassmbled.
Looks fine inside. Just needed the hard grease removed. Gonna repaint the case and face plate and put it back together.

beans, be very careful from here. That housing is very touchy with the springy things and such.

In your pic it would be the thing (you don't have apart yet). Back of the picture, 2nd from the right, beside the black hooey, ya that thingy. Sorry for all the high techy words.

Just sayin

Thanks Supernash, I didn't see a reason to take that apart, moved very well.

It's back together now and spins really nice and smooth now!
