This will certainly show my ignorance but what is a stroker?  Why is it called a stroker? I'm guessing both questions would get the same answer.

No questions are stupid.A change in Crank shaft stroke. ie small block chev 350; 4 inch bore/ 3.48 stroke is stock. A variation would be 3.75 stoke with a

standard bore. Then you can change connecting rod length also . Many different combos. All cost $$$$$

So altered connecting rods makes any car a stroker. And altering connecting rods improves performance ? So a gasser is probably but not necessarily a stroker ?

        No. Yes/No.  Yes.

The term stroker refers to the 'length' of stroke of the crankshaft. Altering connecting rods does not make any car a stroker.

Altering connecting rods can/ cannot improve performance

A "Gasser" is a name given to race cars that usually have a front straight axle, big engine and of older body styles.

I have to ask,,,, you been around cars long????????????????????

A Stroker is a member of a car club in Galt (Cambridge) called the Strokers founded in 1954. They built dragsters, Competition coupes, altereds and stockers but never gassers I believe, but a lot of their street creations wold have qualified as gassers.

A gasser is a car that can have altered suspension, must be full fendered and the engine can be set back to where the front spark plug is 10% of the total wheelbase behind the front axle.
An altered can have any suspension including a solid mounted rear axle. The engine can be set back 25% and some body panels can be removed including fenders.
A dragster is basically a frame or chassis with only slight front suspension and unlimited engine set back. Most today have rear mounted engines and most clad the chassis with a aerodynamic skin.
Stock is just what is says although some speed equipment might be added.
There are many other classes, but generally are variants of the above.

Junior, Jim is new to this game but by asking questions, and he asks a lot, he has done amazing things. Check on some of his posts on upholstery and metal work. He is not afraid to tackle any part or issue with his hot rod. I know you weren't being insulting, but from what I've seen come and go here over the years, maybe they should have asked more questions.

By the way, I don't think I am any more knowledgeable, just have a habit of rambling on.

It's an engine that has had the crankshaft changed from stock. The new crankshaft usually has 1/4" (approx) more stroke meaning the piston travels up and down 1/4" more. This changes the cubic inches of the engine making it bigger, more powerful.
The rods are sized so the pistons don't go right past the top of the block and hit the cylinder head.
So the rod is exactly as named. It just "connects" the two items so no more power from the rods.
