If you are a magazine reader as I am you will be disappointed with the list of mags that are to be discontinued. I got the link from Canadian Rodder.

I just found out too. Not really surprised. I have been discontinuing my subscriptions for the last couple years. I still prefer to read a paper magazine to online but I just don't read as much as I used to.
On the flip side maybe in a few years the stash of old car mags in the basement will be worth something.

Well it is expensive anymore. If you buy two or three mag's a month it adds up. It's cheaper with a subscription but still pricey.
I have decided I'm going to go with the electronic version of Goodguys membership. I forget the actual cost but it's up around $100 USD a year and electronic is about half the cost.

Hey Guys don't forget we have Canadian Hot rod magazine. Terry Denomme does a great job of covering Canadian content.

I always buy Canadian Hot Rod, I don't want that one to disappear. It's awesome seeing cars and people you know sometimes in a magazine! (And secretly hoping to see yourself in there one day. lol) And Kenny is taking some of the best car photos of any car magazine out there! Canadian Hotrods is getting better and better!

I have every copy since issue 1, been a subscriber since I saw the first issue. Best magazine out there. Terry wrote this posting on Facebook this weekend. If you want to continue to get the best rodder magazine out there, read it and heed it.

From Terry Denomme

When I first read yesterday’s TEN Media bombshell regarding the closing of 19 titles I can’t say I was shocked. A couple of months ago I’d had some inside info that this might be coming but honestly believed it would be years not months before it would happen.
After a few hours of reading online what people had to say about the closures I felt some clarifications were needed and proceeded to write a 1,500+-word treatise on the state of print publishing. Thankfully, this isn’t it. Let’s be honest, a lot of us don’t have the inclination or attention span to read that many words in one sitting and really it was belabouring a point that could be clearly stated in fewer words.
So, lets get to it. First, corporate greed may have had a hand in yesterday’s decision but declining readership and declining ad revenues were the prime motivators.
The reasons for declining readership are many and include the advent of the television for starters but more recently social media and the evolution of streaming video content, both of which have shortened our attention spans. (And yes, I’m aware of the irony of posting this diatribe on this platform but if you stick your head in the sand for too long you will suffocate). Yesterday many argued poor quality content was to blame and I don’t support that but it’s such a subjective position I won’t attempt to argue it. I will say that while corporate “bean counters” may not love this hobby like we do, the editors, writers and photographers who created those magazines do and they were creating excellent content right up to yesterday’s announcement.
In print publishing advertising revenue has long been a crucial part of a magazine’s revenue/profit stream. We may not like it and it can create issues but a lot of creative content in society would be more expensive to purchase or consume if it didn’t exist.
Nobody wants what amounts to a flyer pretending to be a magazine but in business, profit matters. If there is no profit there is likely no business and that means no work for employees, no taxes for government to collect, less revenue to expand or improve and the list goes on. That said there needs to be balance. I’m fine with 50/50 (sadly not our magazine's ratio) but that’s coming from the perspective of someone who knows a little about what it costs to get a publication off the press and into the mailbox. If you want 60/40, 70/30 or maybe even no advertising that means some changes and you might not like them.
If you want a magazine with less or even no advertising then better get out your wallet because if advertising revenue didn't subsidize the costs cover and subscriptions prices would rise significantly. I haven’t done the math but cover prices close to $20 per issue don’t seem ridiculous and maybe even more depending on issues per year and page counts. Subscription costs to your favourite magazine with no discount built into them might be as high as a $100 to $200 a year or maybe more depending on circulation. It could happen one day. Canadian Hot Rods is already a small example of this. We are grateful for any advertising revenue we generate and always hope for more but have never had the luxury of creating enough to pay even the printing costs of one issue. We’ve had to make sure our cover price and subscription prices help pay for printing, shipping and freelance costs while creating some profit so we can pay our personal bills, mortgage, food, utilities, gas and maybe if we are lucky a little extra in the RRSP at the end of the year. It means our subscription prices are higher than many of the US magazines that were just shuttered but it’s been a necessary aspect of our business. If trends continue, prices for all magazines will rise.
So, now you know that ad revenue make your magazine cost less at the newsstands, if you can find a newsstand that is. Rack space for magazines has been rapidly declining over the years and that’s due to a few factors including that retailers don’t make significant profit selling magazines. When people stop buying them, they make even less…so out go magazines replaced by bags of chips or some cheap knick-knack with a huge profit margin. It’s business and I get it but don’t like it.
So, no matter what you feel about corporate greed the two main reasons for yesterday’s bleak announcement are again lack of readership and declining ad revenue.
Maybe the vacuum created by the demise of 19 car magazine titles will give smaller magazines like mine an opportunity to attract more readers and advertising. We’ll explore it. We have to.
But if you love hot rod magazines here’s what it comes down to and it’s especially so for smaller magazines like mine: Don’t take them for granted. Single copy sales and subscription sales matter now more than they ever have. Not only will it help the bottom line but it will help us stay relevant with the advertisers we do have. Support the magazines you love that are still in print all the time and not just occasionally. If you’ve been thinking of buying a subscription, buy one. Our rates won’t break your budget and you won’t go hungry. Buy a subscription for a friend for Christmas. Tell your friends to subscribe. Readers you are not helpless in this. The print game is changing for sure and it’s becoming a team sport. If you love magazines we need your financial support, insight and even maybe your freelance participation if you’ve got the chops.
Love to hear what you think. Facebook says we have 25,000 followers..if I hear from even 500 of you I’d be ecstatic.
