I am looking for information on replacing my stock points with a hall effect trigger.what I need is to hear from anyone who has done it.I do not want theories on doing it but facts from someone who has done it.the only thing I want to change is the points NOT the coil etc.I think it should be a simple task I just need as I said someone that has done it.the car still has its 6 volt positive ground system athough I do not think that has any bearing on it as it will only be triggering the coil thanks
thanks big guy that is probably what I am thinking.the problem is reading the specs it says requires 8-16 volts with my 6 volt max is 7.2 even though they say 6 volt.I like many have read how they are very sensitive on volts so I do not think it is for me.there is a possibility what I want may not be possible.that would probably be good on 12 volt but I want to keep the 6 volt.I may be using the wrong term by saying hall effect if I could fit a leprechaun under the cap with a switch to turn off and on to interrupt the flow of current to the coil it would solve my quest again thanks chief
I was curious about some of this and while I am not certain of this .It does explain it to me.. But I do say a call to pertronix is free and I understand they are a real good company to deal with..
A testimonial from been there done that''
Several years ago I wanted eliminate the constant problem with poor quality points,, i.e. points have not been used in mainstream vehicles for almost thirty years.
I got conflickting info from counter men so, I called Pertonix.. I told the tech rep that I had a '53 Pontiac 8 with a positive ground 6v. I was given the correct module number for the Pontiac and was told that I had to use Pertronic's 12v Flame Thrower II coil..
I questioned the 12v coil on the 6v system? The Pertronix tech responded that 6v systems have a lot of resistance, therefore a 12v coil is required.. I was also told to eliminate the ballast resistor because the Pertronix module requires full voltage..
The event: :)
I took the car and the Pertronix components to my tuneup man for installation.. Later in the day I got a call from the tuneup man.. He told me I had the wrong components for a Pontiac 8.. I told him he was wrong, he was looking at the tuneup spec's for Pontiac V8's, a 53 is a straight eight.. A question was also raised about the 12v coil on a 6v pos ground system.. Here again I told him to install what I brought him and to remove the ballast resisitor per the instructions..
My tuneup man told me the system would fail, I was on my own...
I had the car for several years, never had a problem with the Pertronix...
Hope this answers your qhestion about getting enough voltage to fire the ignighter.. you do neet use their 12v coil and you should be good to go.. Anyway hope that helps.. but hey a call to the Manufacturer tech line is free.. It was a interesting question..

I may go that way just looking for another avenue other than electronic.at least you had experience with the same 6v positive ground and 12 volt coil.I have no resistor on my system unlike the 12 volt when they switched too 12 volt.I will let you know what I find may be a while as I am waiting on other replies.thanks again big guy
I see now why you suggested phoning just checking their web site what a major pain in the ass.followed the steps and then it would not advance past the engine selection it was hung up on 6 cylinder for whatever reason tried a few times.since it has been awhile since you dealt with them I may try a chinese language course before trying to contact them
