I recall a few years ago heading south on 35/155 from Peterborough and seeing a convoy of vintage tin heading north. It looked wonderful. I'd like to join in one of those convoys someday. Are they a regular thing through the summer ?
I guess it was a stupid question. I thought people might meet up somewhere before going to an event and then all go together. Safety in numbers and all that. Sorry I asked.
Actually it's not a stupid question. The term Cruise Nights has nothing to do with cruising like we used to do back in the 60s. All the hot rodders and the performance car guys would gather at the local burger joint and then head out to cruise the main streets and probably end up at a deserted road for a few run offs. Unfortunately, for many reasons, this tradition ended. Today bikers do it more then hot rodders but every so often a club or a group of people organize an outing where you take your car and actually drive it on a cruise. There is no sight like it. It is not a stupid question, just a sign of the times.
The Piston Pushers out of Brantford have been doing one a year for the last few years. They have 3 places in Brantford set up, a Dairy Queen, a Tim Hortons and a A&W. You drive from one place to the next and get a card that they stamp. Once it has all 3 stamps on it you hand it for a chance at a door prize. I know cars that have gone around 3 or 4 times and get 4 chances. Usually around 9:00 everybody gathers at the A&W (biggest parking lot) for a D.J and giving out door prizes. It's always a lot of fun.
Also usually see a gathering of 5 or 6 cars headed to a big event like Columbus or Syracuse.
Check out www.canadianrodder.com/forum/. Frank Calgoni runs a trip every 3 years to co-inside with Deuce Days in Victoria BC. In the off years he runs some trips around Ontario and some East destinations
Thank you all. I will check out the site to see of any Ontario runs. I don't want to venture too far until I know my ride better. A group run to anywhere sounds like fun. Thank you all again.
Frank's run to Deuce Days was cancelled this year for lack of interest but they just finished the eastern run through Michigan, crossing at Macinac and coming down through Ontario. Reports say it was an awesome tour. Personally, I've done some great tours up your way to Baltimore, Keene and Norwood. The ELTA seems to do tours frequently to a show, or to visit a shop or just for breakfast. It just takes someone to organize. Put a posting on here, "anyone in the Peterborough area going to the Norwood show, why don't we meet along Hwy 7" or something like that. Maybe there's a group from the area going to the ELTA bash or to the Jalopy Jamup.
There's a group of hotrodders in my area that get together on tuesdays. For a period in the summer they're hosting a 'hotrod movie night' at the theatre in oshawa which is not my favorite. But the group of guys prefer driving over a traditional sit in the parking lot kinda get together. So when the movie stuff is done we all just pick somewhere and drive there. Wherever it may be..
One of the coolest nights was about 15-20 of us driving east on 2 towards port hope on a tuesday evening and some guy cruising in his chevelle saw us drive by and pulled a u-turn and just joined in!
Those are the best nights when we all just drive around together. Even the breakdowns are kinda fun (more fun when it's not you I supppose)
The ELTA might be a bit far for me if 'L' stands for London ? The Jalopy Jam up sounds nice. I'll have to see where it is and when. The cruise nights to a movie might be good but driving home around here at night sounds awful. We get a lot of deer strikes (and Raccoons and porcupines too) here so I try to avoid night driving. So it sounds like the Jalopy Jam up might be my only option for now. I look forward to it if it isn't to New York or something a little too far. A train of rods would be such a hoot to join. Thank you ! Time to research.
HI JAMES : Regarding your question about convoys ; I am part of a small group of " Gearheads " that go for breakfast every Thursday A M - In the Winter we hole -up in a regular location ( Perth ) -- In the warm weather , we move around to various restaurants in other towns / villages , usually within a one hour radius , and , if the weather and the mood suits us , we take " The Long Way Home " . One of the group usually knows some neat little reason for not going directly home -- PLUS , we are driving our classic cars !! Doesn't get any better -- Happy Cruising !!-- LATER -- DON / FLEET 51
I don't know if this will be a destination for you Fleet 51 but I recall living and working in Ottawa years ago. We had to do a job sw of Ottawa and for lunch, we went to a diner way out in nowhere (again, in the sw) and it was run by two older ladies and the food was fantastic. I know that isn't a lot to go on but if you like cruising, it would be a fun search and worth it if they are still there.
HI JAMES : Thanks for the tip -- I am about 1:15 minutes from Ottawa - It would be cool to track down your diner - Thanks again , for the tip -- LATER -- DON / FLEET 51
