Was this inevitable and will it be here soon

From CNN this morning:

It might soon be useless to put the pedal to the metal if you're driving a new car in Europe. Starting in 2022, new cars sold in Europe will have to have systems designed to limit their speed. It's all part of new safety rules from the European Union. The new rules will also require crash data recorders and reversing cameras in cars. Safety advocates praised the new rules, and a European commissioner said the steps must be taken because some 25,000 people are killed on European roads each year. But others raised concerns about drivers possibly growing complacent and focusing less on road conditions, and some car makers worry about how the new technologies will be implemented. The EU rules must still be OK'd by member states and the European Parliament

The power of the insurance cartel!

the manufacturers are bringing it on themselves they hype the HP numbers and equip the cars with all the aids they can lane departure collision warning etc everything but wipe your ass (next thing).then commercials showing idiots driving as fast as they can through city streets to bring their pregnant wife ice cream.then the one where the idiot stuck in traffic wheels off the road drives like an ass cross country.I doubt it can be chalked up to the insurance cartels.there is no need to build a car that can go way faster than the posted limit NONE.I like speed as well as the next but did it on a track.

Wow, I can't wait. I hope they bring it over soon. Govern them at 105KPH just like big trucks. Imagine never getting a speeding ticket on the 401. The cops could spend more time chasing real criminals instead of handing out speeding tickets. Think of all the people in the left lane wishing they had just another 1/4 KPH faster to get by the loser in the right lane. Think of how tightly packed groups of cars will be, none of them able to go faster. It will be interesting at the on ramps.

This is the problem with people making laws about something they know nothing about. I travel all over the US and truckers without governors seem to obey the speed limits pretty well but when they get into a hilly situation, they maintain their speed. As for on ramps, I am convinced most people when they were taught to drive, were told to stop and yield if there was traffic in the lanes. Don't ever accelerate and merge. Scary. And how about people who believe the safest lane on the hiway is the passing lane, so they stay there all day driving below the speed limit causing other drivers to go around them on the right and probably a major cause of road rage.

Two laws I have seen and like are when passing a transport, give 100' before pulling in and if you are driving in such a manner as to back up traffic by 8 vehicles or more, you will be prosecuted.

My understanding is that back up cameras are required in Canada starting this year on all new cars. Had an insurance guy tell me that most newer cars also have something similar to a black box they can plug into to see what was happening with the car just before an accident. Just want I was told.

Black box is the air bag module. Access only by insurance people, cops etc. Dealers can't access it. Seen it done 10 years ago at the dealership I was working at. Airbags blew, owner denied hitting anything. Recording module said otherwise.

Not sure how I feel about this type of control, but there are many brave souls that don’t get speed and braking relationship. Basically cars would be bunched up I think on highways...kinda like the last lap on a NASCAR track. I will add to the comment about plugging a car in and retrieving data. I first hand seen OPP crash investigation officers plug in and get all the info on a particular car . Covers braking actuation acceleration . There was quite the menu of data ....

All of which is why even though my wife owns and drives a brand new vehicle - I won't. It's not that I'm reckless or an a##hole driver, I just have a thing about big brother messing in everything we do.
I was a volunteer driver with Family and Children's Services for the past 8 years. I'm on the highway alot and like most truck drivers who spend hours behind the wheel I've seen people do the damndest things but if you bring it up to them - they're offended. Well tough sh!t, learn to drive and share the roadways like civilized individuals.
