Knew we could be in trouble when I let Howard out Saturday morning about 5 am (going to a swap meet) and got a wiff of Peppe Le Pew.  He released and Howard got in the 'mist'. Not a full frontal squirt. All good now except for this morning. He's still around. The third pic is Mini Weiner dog and skunk side by side. 1 2 & 4 are Peppe. In the 3rd pic he dragged his tail in the snow; this is a BIG Skunk.

The live trap goes out to night, I know where he lives    biggrin

i recommend you take both the trap and the 22. i learned shooting them too close to the house or barn causes a big stink for awhile. lol  throw a blanket over it in the trap and go for a walk somewhere down wind.  stand the trap on its end, still covered, and have at it with the 22. you will be burning the blanket or burying it with the skunk though. lol

i remember mom got some over spray once in the wood shed and the dog took a full frontal when i was a young-in. she was crying for 2 or 3 days about it with us kids bugging her about the stink, that is till dad was around. lol

My 490 Winchester only chambers .22 long rifle. I have a 1200fps .177 pelllet rifle that will do him in- the head. Living in 'Town' the .22 would be way too loud and police live within a two block radius. The trap went out last night with Sardines; no skunk. With the warm up coming ,the bait will go out every night for a couple weeks.

John, I can pretty much assure you, a pellet gun won't work. I have a 22 cal pellet rifle, apparently high power, with a scope, I bought to whack Coons caught in the cage out here. Even at point blank, it just pissed them off.

My real 22's are the only way. You wouldn't believe how tough Possums are to even drown.

At point blank, in the cage, there isn't any noise from the gun. Jus sayin.

i am inclined to think the pellet gun wouldn't be big enough either. being in town probably .22 shorts would do the trick with very little bang, it's more like a loud pooof.

Had a ground hog problem once , living in the city 22 was out of the question .built a wooden box to fit over the trap with a hose attached , 10 minutes with the hose attached to the exhaust of the truck and the problem was gone.Green garbage bag and dispose of in the garbage can the next time you fill up.😉

My .177 rifle required a P A L to purchase. Store bought  air guns -CTC, TSC  etc  are 495 feet per second or LESS by LAW. Point blank in the cage there is Noise-

been there done it= which is why I have this rifle.  smile

i use that method most of the times also. i hook the tail pipe from my old 65 diesel massy to a box and when it starts up from cold it smokes pretty good till it is warmed up. depending on the time of day i usually hook it up and go for a coffee or a beer, when i get back dig a hole and the job is done. i get a lot of unwanted pets dropped off when they pull up to the 4 corner stop sign and there is a barn on the corner this close to town. w.t.f.--a-holes. that's another topic, with skunks i just like to get it over and done with the least amount of handling. hadn't seen many skunks in this area for awhile but i am starting to see the odd one more often lately. i probably should get into the sally ann for some extra blankets. what about racoon's joe, do you get many around? i hear they can be hard to get rid of when the get into a neighbor hood.

More skunks around than raccoons , our neigbourhood has big plastic bins for garbage and recycle so there isnt much food available to the raccoons , skunks on the other hand eat grubs and vegetation .I have 3 dogs as well so not to much strays onto the property , but it is a real drag when the dogs manage to corner a skunk , it happens about once a summer !!!

Neighbour (single lady) has a pool that I fish drowned skunks out of a couple of times a season , freaks her right out .

what are you using for bait? i am surprised you haven't caught a couple of cats 2 or 3 time's and don't forget a blanket if a trap has a skunk or you will be wearing it.

I know everyone has their own idea on how to do things. Do as you want. This is how I get rid of unwanted critters.
Since I moved here I've got rid of 87 squirrels,, 13 raccoons and  I think 8 skunks and a BLUE JAY. Never had a problem catching any of these.
The first thing FOR A SKUNK the cage has to be the type that opens the door when it flips upside down. The other type that you need to push here and push there at the same time are not the type you want to catch a skunk in.Last thing you want to do is have to fight with the cage to release a skunk.
I use the cheapest cat food the FOOD TOWN has don't worry about best before date.
I set it up at a location which is clear of other junk so when I walk up blindly holding the blanket as a barrier  so he can't see me I don't fall. If he can't see you he won't spray.
Put the food so it is as far away from the outer edges as possible, as the skunk will try to get the reward from outside the cage.
When I set up the cage I make sure it is barely caught so it trips easily.
Cover the cage remember which end has the door. Relocate,, set the cage so the door end is pointing toward the ditch (door end lower).
I have a broomstick with a paint roller frame screwed on the end to retrieve stuff from the front of the truck box that I use to flip the cage. The door falls open and the skunk or raccoon saunders off. He's happy with me 'cuz I just released him from a trap.
Sorry to ramble but I'm still laid up and tired of watching TV

Thank's TMJ, I 'ii get some cat food and try it. I use a live trap; either 2 doors in or one. Have caught them in this before. It suck's being confined to the house and TV has it's moments. Go easy, you will be up and 'running' before you know it.
