That's exactly the problem oldkoot,..and Ford quit the recall in 2014,..( guess it got too expensive for them ). I read well over 130 posts from Stateside, and Canada ( then I gave up ), of guy's having problems with this,..and on a few occasions they ended up bending up their vehicle when it happened,..and it happens without warning, and in a heartbeat. Just wondering if anyone on here had this issue,..and had a diagnostic performed on their own vehicle to find the exact cause. Mine went for a **** a week ago last Thursday on the 2013 Ford Escape,... ( 47000 Kliks total on it ),...called the Ford dealership,..inquired as to the cost to repair it,...couldn't tell me until they did a diagnostic, ( understandable ),..but given the history of the problem I assumed that they may have already repaired enough of them to give me a ball park figure of the repair cost. Diagnostic apparently showed that the power assist gear ( electric ), self destructed, ..sealed unit,..have to replace the entire unit,..the replacement part is a mere $1,359.00,...plus,..plus,...plus,..to the tune of just shy of $2,460.00 installed and working again, but no guarantee as to how long the replacement unit will last,...as I brought that issue up with the service manager,..and he flat out stated " Not Really,...just the warranty on the part itself ". My warranty on the car apparently ran out back in 2016 ( 3 years ) and steering is not covered under drive train.
I brought the problem to the attention of my mechanic, ( mechanic for my "weekend" cars ) over in London, ( Pete Vanbrug ) who is 110% FORD,...and I explained the situation to him,..and he told me to give him a couple days to look into it as he has 3 or 4 friends who work at Ford dealerships. He got back to me a few days ago and stated that the most common cause of the loss of power steering on the 2008 ( and up ) Ford Escapes was an issue with the "steering assist torque sensor " a little round disc with electric connector that fits over the steering shaft,..and located just underneath the steering wheel,....he had replaced one in his neighbors vehicle back in 2014,...cost ( $71.90 US dollars ) and labour consisted of pulling the steering wheel,..pulling old unit,..installing new one and reinstalling the steering wheel,...less than 1 hour. Thinking I just may order up that part and give it a try,....$75.00 is a long way from $2,460.00 that I was quoted for repairs.
Thank's guys for your input,..appreciated. Just thought that I would ask around before I made any decision on the repair.
