Back in about 1985 I was driving an beater of an old 3/4 Dodge. One day I pulled in the local building supply and loaded about 80 sheets of drywall. A new Ford pulled in beside me and did the same. He left first. A short while later I was driving home when I passed the Ford at the side of the road. The back of his cab and the front of his box were on the ground. His frame had bent. Apparently Ford was drilling the frames to lighten the truck.

thats pretty funny right there, lol. probably one of those new space age al-u-mini-um ford trucks, lol. guessing that remark will spark a debate, lol.

most people don't realize that sand is one of the heaviest aggregate products to haul if you cube it out. it's just sand, put some more on. luckily he was on or parked on a residential street and not somewhere playing in a lot of traffic. if he was parked there unloading some he probably should of started at the front of the trailer, not the back taking weight off the counter balance of the load behind the trailer axle. um-um-um, that could of been a lot worse scenario.

 All I heard was a loud 'Bang' and looked out front and saw the truck and trailer,then the kids and Grand Pa got out and he looked at the underside at the cab/box  gap.By the time I got the camera,the kids were starting to unload. He hauled this from someplace here to his house. The truck sits in his driveway now,hasn't moved all day. I believe it's Toast.

 maybe and maybe not. at the end of the day it boils down to whoever loaded it with what and how would be my take on it. it's obviously well built or it would be broke, not the truck. i bought a new galvanized heavy tandem dump trailer a couple of years ago and if someone asks if they can borrow it using a 1/2 ton i just laugh and say no as its dam near too heavy for your truck empty and you want to put something on it. they will build and sell you any size trailer you want but its up to you use it properly. they didn't ask me what i was pulling it with or what i was going to put on it. unless you are seeing something wrong with the build of that trailer that i'm not catching that is.

Lots of weight on the tongue of that trailer.. wheels are not centered on that trailer very well..Must be a bit heavy just to pick it up and hook it up the truck..smile

 Exactly. The wheels are too far back putting the tongue weight way over what it should be.

If the axle was more forward, he would be pulling weight only, mostly, not carrying so much.

 ok guys,  i have to respectfully agree to disagree with you's on the design of the trailer. that trailer has to be in the 10ft length range and it is a utility trailer not a dump trailer. any trailer much over 6ft should probably have a jack on it anyway. even a dump trailer that length should have a tandem axle back past center and there is a reason for that which would be another topic. the guy obviously screwed up loading it with sand to the gun-walls from the front to the back not knowing how heavy sand is and he got caught probably thinking i am only going a mile or 2. guessing, he probably didn't load much past the axle with the grated ramp on it either.

 anyway, it is well built obviously, it didn't break.  lol

I have looked at this picture for a while now. The trailer homemade or not looks like it was built correctly. As it sits the tongue is bent up a bit indicating that it was over loaded on the front part. The tires are a bit flattened but could be lack of air or something else as well. The truck however is sitting level with only the box sagging at the back. I wonder how the hitch is installed. It almost looks like the box has fallen over the frame somehow. Wonder if the truck was in a rear ended accident before. I tow 4000 plus pounds with a 1/2 ton truck all the time and have never had a problem like that. If that trailer is a 6 x 10 with 1 foot sides that will work out to about 4500 lbs of sand. The truck should easily handle that. Seems like the truck was the problem not the loading of the trailer. Just my opinion.

I'm not sure of the year, but the truck looks to be about 15 years old. The frame was probably rusted out in the wheel well area and that's where it bent. Just a possible explanation. Doesn't look like an insurance claim. Wear and tear only. The hitch should handle at least 700 lbs of tongue weight. John, maybe a quick boo at the truck could answer a few speculations.

         I went for a bike ride (pedal) and had a look see. Yes, frame is bent behind cab, didn't look at hitch mounting.

 i would think it has more than 1ft sides on it unless he is a midget, they appear to be about approx his knee height. i had to marten, lol. you can haul 4000-5000-6000lbs maybe more with a 1/2 ton if it is on a trailer built to handle it and it is loaded properly. there probably should of been about 2 or 3ft of near empty space at the front of that trailer to balance out the tongue weight.  borrowing this off another ford truck forum and i wouldn't of known the #'s if i didn't look it up,  it says,

To the OP. The maximum tongue weight on the receiver hitch that comes with an F150 is 500 pounds. It goes up to the max of 1100 pounds if a weight distributing hitch is used. The receiver is not a weight distributing hitch. If you are at 950 pounds of tongue, you need a WDH, period.
 
i'm not disputing your numbers marten, maybe a little more than the 4500 though, lol, but the guy really screwed up how he loaded it. maybe, ah it's just sand throw some more on, maybe we can get enough with one load. i don't know how far they traveled like that but he's lucky he got as far as he did. there's probably a big pot hole just down the street, lol.

Well, I just did some figuring, and looking at the trailer, it looks like about a 5x10 with 18" walls. Looks like it was loaded even with top of boards. So you have about 75 cuft of space, and sand weighs 120lb/cuft, and comes out to 9000lb, and about 2.7 yd. BTW, the truck is a 03 at the newest, and those years Ford were a piece of **** for rust.

 i concur with everything he just said and what he said about the truck to. probably a 4000lb axle also. he is a very lucky person it happened where it did and not somewhere with a bunch of traffic and more speed. he actually should of been charged for an unsafe vehicle to dummy him up as it could of been a lot worse and with people hurt.

but, what were not hearing is how many wheel barrows full of sand junior got while helping out a fellow neighbor. humph- free sand delivered to your front door. you can sign me up for some of that.  lmao

I found a video file stored the same day the picture was taken. This camera has video capabilities also and it was set at Video, when I realized this, I had my wife set it back to pic. The file is too large to up load 13.3 MB. By this time, the kids had removed a large portion of the front pile . It clearly shows the Sand piled forward towards the tounge ABOVE the siderails.

No sand for me, they are building a shed or shop or something in their back yard.I believe that 3 generations live in this house, at times you cannot park on the street for their visitors. They just took out 2  40 ft spruce trees so they could build.

Looks like a late 90's maybe early 2000 truck. I would put money on the frame rotten. Seen it before. The trailer tires don't really look like they are squatting that bad. Still a big load, too much. But I would bet frame was toast before it was loaded.
