66 feet across the back of our lot, 8 feet high & 50/50 cost split with buddy neighbor.
posts are 4 feet in the ground, we dig by hand, no auger, 3 bags QuickCrete
Found an old Horse shoe in the 1st hole about 4 feet down
There was a very large Slippery Elm in almost the S/W corner. It was 48" across the stump. The debris in the photo is on what's left of it. I had to cut out pieces of the root from the 1st hole with the reciprocating saw; then the blade came out, so here I am with my head in a hole , pulling on the blade to free it. Head full of dirt, 4 f*&^ sakes! More to follow , this view is West

thats a lot of work jr at 66ft across, thats a lot of holes dug by hand. not living in a city/town i am surprised they let you go 8ft up. fyi, a couple of years ago i ran some electric fence through a soggy bush that i didn't want to take the back hoe in and rented a tracked bob cat with an auger from battlefield for a day. best 300.00 and change i spent in awhile and if those roots weren't too big it would go through them slowly. they might have a point with the 6x6 posts with that much height as it will be catching a lot of wind probably depending on center spacing. they say good fences make good neighbors.
good for you bud, my back is hurting thinking about it, lol.

Not trying to be a smart a$$, John, but if I was going with a 8' high fence, there would be 6x6 for posts instead of 4x4
I thought about that also TMJ & Parklane - Parklane, you have seen my size & build; can you imagine me trying to put a 6X6 , 12 feet long in a 4 foot hole????? To handle these puppy's (6X6) I would need Hurculean Strenght !!!!
It is sheltered to a degree back here, I am hoping it will not blow down LOL

My 1st discussion with neighbor was to go 10 feet, because when I am on my deck and he is on his, @ 8 feet I still see him. The 10 foot fence would have had 6x6 posts for certain. All in now, let it cure and start boards in a day or two.

As I wait, I took this pic to show my progress and to tell a little story
You can see in the photo as we look west, north to the right: you can see the downward slope in the yard as we go north.
My dad had this built in '73 as a rental. The year before he had a new home built in Corinth Ontario on the 45acre farm he had purchased. When it came time to backfill the foundation at the farm home, the dullard's squashed the waste pipe to the septic tank and my dad had to fix it himself. So when it came time to backfill the home in Aylmer, he made them stay away from the house, far away. Where the garden is in the pic, this spot had to all be flattened. We had a 'jelly pool' when our son was young and had to flatten that spot also, firepit is on that spot. When I cut grass, I have to go uphill at some point, and down. It drains very well. You can see the depressions all over the yard. My idea was to put dirt up to the bottom of the vertical boards but it look's like I may require a dump truck load to do that. I forgot to mention this is All sand. I found some clay when I did last years fence on the north side, probably fill.
Nothing works like string and 4 string levels: After straightening ALL horizontals because I am a dumb@$$ , got two sections up, spaced at
2x4 width. Both of us are pleased so far and neighbor is helping too I am putting my sandpoint back in after this is done; water is 3ft from the surface in the N W corner of the lot!

Junior, fifth board from the left side looks to be about 3/16" off vertical. Sorry just had to do it, just kidding. The fence looks great, nice and straight, boards all spaced the same and the line across the top is excellent. Well done. Judging from the pictures it looks like you had fun doing it as well. Fences make great neighbours.
