Y.O.M. plates - worth the cost?

My lady bought me sweet '59 plates and the number is unregistered (meaning I can use it) but at $251 to register them and another $120 for the sticker for 1 year, I am having second thoughts. What do you guys think? I want my truck to be a pretty much period custom (though with tilt and a 350 motor) and the plates will be a cool touch, but that is a lot of money to give to the government when I could be on the road for the $120 on the current plate I already have, or even the $18 or whatever it is for the 'historical' sticker.

Here's a snap of the plate still in the plastic from the guy who restores and sells  them (forget who he was).

*Edit*  It is a useable number TODAY, but I was told it isn't guaranteed until they see my plates, then return them, then I buy a sticker. Plus, by the looks of the paperwork, if I send them, etc. then can't register them back at home, I don't get the $251 back.  F@kin brilliant.

been there, done that. same era black plate on my 50 truck. i didn't get the sending it in, kingston, either. it boils down to whether you want it on there or not when it comes to the money. the 250.00 is a so called inspection charge to have them approve of the plates condition whether it is usable or not. it is a bit cheaper than having vanity plates made but 250 just for them to say nay or yea is a hard swallow. just supposing, you send it in 250 paid and they so no due to the condition. now you get them back and re-man them, to their specs, do you send in another 250 for another look see, i wonder. that plate looks pretty good shape and the sticker cost is the same for all.

I don't see how it isn't going to pass, being that it must be original  (weight and design) and it has been restored. Since she paid good money for it, I'm thinking I will follow through and just pay up. It doesn't have the same restrictions the Historical plates do, so that is a bonus.

i kinda gotta agree with slim's line of thinking on this but seeing how i don't know you i might of substituted mentally challenged for the term retarded. your lady friend was obviously thinking of you when she found and bought the plates and now you are balking at the cost to put them on. hmmm!

how about this logic,

--every time you use the truck and the plates aren't on it you will hear about it and as time march's on you will hear about it more and more every

time you do use it and you are balking at the cost to do so.

                   or

-you bite the bullet, spend the money and put them on knowing every time you use it she is smiling and not harping about them not being on

there. no matter how you do the math it will come up  "priceless"  with them on there. and you might get lucky every time your take her for a ride

= your call

I agree with Shag.

Get the ball rolling on this before you're in the dog house.

Besides, those plates look so cool.

If you don't put them on, are you prepared to clean the house, cook your own meals, do the dishes/laundry and sleep on the sofa for the rest of life ? Ha !

Not to mention other benefits you could miss out on.

Pricy, ya but the thought, man that is amazing. Others have said it already, perhaps harsher then I would but by the same token I would go for it. As long as it is not taking away from food on the table or something else that is a need. In a year from now you won't even miss the money. After all how much money do you have into your rod now?

Haha if I look at it from the "how much is in the truck already?" standpoint, I could buy an LS3 motor or rebuild a 401 nailhead with dual EFI and still sleep well at night. But I hear ya, $250 is a drop in the bucket for something that is pretty cool and unique.

I shipped off the plates yesterday. This all better go smoothly (Gov. says they are not responsible for lost plates...I'd go postal! if that happened)

no

Oh , I see how it is!

ya know, years ago when my daughter was probably 5 she went shopping with my hubby for my birthday and decided I needed some of those blue flickering lights they sold at Walmart that just screwed on your valve stems. They showed up just great at night spinning around on my wheels.😳

But I put them on and drove like a rock star because the smile on my little girls face was awesome.

A lot of thought and effort went into that thoughtful gift so just put your big girl panties on and use the plates.wink

Good for you Nick.. it wouldn't have looked right with new plates.

I was thinking about making a little aluminum plate to go on the top right corner of the plate for the sticker. Then I wouldn't  have to put the  sticker on the plate. Probably not legal but I'll  deal with that if it happens.

That's what I'm doing, just a little plate that'll be on the top right corner for the sticker. The guys that sell the YOM plates (some small businesses that sell them guaranteed to pass inspection and be good numbers) do that. They sell a little steel tag with a bead that matches the license plate. I'm just making my own and painting black. There's nowhere to put a sticker on a 29 plate without blocking something.

Mine came back from Kingston pen all good, so I'm waiting to buy the pricey sticker for when my truck is actually done sometime this summer. I've been told that the plates are affixed to my name now, even though I don't have a sticker. I've been brainstorming tag ideas, and I like the look of it high and behind my plate, but I have a feeling there is no free room up there. Definitely won't be if I run a roll pan instead of a bumper (59 apache, not the 36 in my avatar).

My over-arching worry is that I may have a beer somewhere, then a cop will pull me over thinking my plates are wack when he gets up behind me and doesn't bother to look me up in his computer. Ideally, driving this 4 year project around will be so fun, I won't even need a beer anywhere...

Personal use only- Renewed the sticker on the 57 the other day 90 bucks ...no pink sticker lady at the wicket said the new rules don't apply  to commercial plate so you only pay for the remainder of the year.

i know comm plates could be licensed in 1/4's, 3 months, some yrs ago, not sure if they still can be. they don't come due on your b-day like pass plates. a lot of dump truck guys didn't buy stickers until 1/2 loads were off on may 1st. the year starts jan-feb-mar, apr-may-june, july-aug sept, etc.
