Cable TV or Dish , or Antenna.

I am going to change my TV service. I currently have COGECO Cable now and they raised my bill 25.00 in December and now another 6.00 in January. Enough is enough. We are living on a Govt. pension and just cant absorb these rates that seem to creep up a couple dollars a month. Between Cable and Whinnie the Shrew and her dam carbon tax  its getting almost impossible to survive . All I can get in Niagara is either Cogeco or Bell and the rates are pretty well the same. I realise with an antenna the channel selection will be slim but i have seen ads for Android boxes or something called Roku and they claim to give hundreds of free channels. Does anyone have any info or experience for these systems. Any help will be much appreciated.

I got a new LG Ultra 4K hd tv for Christmas. It has an 'antenna' hook up. Further investigating I found you can buy a HD tv antenna for these newer tv's and you can receive broadcast signals in HD. I am going to try this. There are plenty of channels still on the 'airwaves'.

Along with a bunch of stuff, this tv is like a computer. It has a hard drive and does updates to the internet.

I want to try an Android box and  get rid of cable. We have 'Kodie' on the computer and watch some shows via HDMI cable

Android box in my house. Works well if you have good internet. We don't but it still does a decent job. The trick is not to get frustrated with the system to quickly. It took us a few weeks to get the hang of it (we still had kids here to show us LOL) but now it is real easy to work. Free always has some give and takes with it and some people can't be bothered.

Rich (not Ben) I am logged in on his account. LOL

It cost me more to watch TV then it cost me to heat our house and a 1200 sq. ft. shop. I don't get Velocity or fancy stuff like that either. Bell called today and said because I'm a valued customer they were going to give me HBO and a few other channels. I said keep it I don't want it, next month or the month after it will be on my bill.  I have about 50 channels with hockey that they can have for one velocity. I think if I lived in Niagara Falls I would have an antenna and clean up on the local stations. I used to have an antenna a few years ago down near Lake erie. It worked good.

Rich tell us more about this box. Please

I put up an outdoor antenna at our place a few weeks ago, and it works really good. In Niagra Falls the reception should be excellent, getting lots of channels from both sides of the border. Junior, the reception in Aylmer should be decent also. BTW, I paid less than $100. for my antenna head, and stuck it on the roof mount where the satellite dish was.

You might want to look at these.

Living close to the border, you will get all the channels you need. I have Roku hooked up to the TV, but it sure eats up the available data from your internet supplier.

This is what we use on our 5th wheel trailer and are very happy with it. Still using Bell Dish at home, no cable out here.

I put up an antenna and was amazed how many channels I got I picked up an antenna at a surplus store was going to put it up at the cottage hung it on a pole hooked it to the tv a presto works well. I read about cable companies getting worried but they way they have ripped off the public who cares.

I might add we are pretty spoiled with the programs we get on the Bell dish network, most of the local programs are not worth watching as they don't carry car programs etc. So as much as we moan about the high cost we do get enjoyment for our dollars.

So,,, Rich. I think I get from your post this Android box works off of the Internet.  Is there any special equipment needed for this system? I can work my computer fairly good but that's about the limit of my electronic knowledge. I have a hard time setting the light timer and the furnace thermostat.

Yes. It works off the internet.  The faster your internet the better it works.  I am in the country so my speed is not great but it is unlimited data.  This type of device uses lots of data if you watch a lot of TV.  It can be frustrating at times no doubt about it but ... when it works, it is very cool.  I have watched old TV series that I never thought I would ever find. Example - Rat Patrol, Baa Baa black sheep squadron.  Basically anything you can think off, you can watch.  I haven't attempted things like live hockey or sports but it can be done I hear.  Everything from brand new movies to old old movies are available to watch.  Learning how to navigate through the screens is about the hardest part but once you catch on it is pretty straight forward.  There are You Tube videos to help fix or figure out things.  I'm not an expert on the device but It does work and do what it is supposed to do.  They pay for themselves in the first month if you watch say the Movie channel on Bell or if your TV bills are over $100/month.  I personally took my satellite purchase down to the bare minimum (only because my wife didn't want to wait a day or two to get her favorite TV show)  and use the android for everything else.  It plugs into your internet connection.  Mine is hard lined to my Wi-Fi router box which worked better than wireless.

But to sum up...LOL

These are not for everyone.  My one buddy hated it and sold it right away.  My other buddy said the same thing to me that  I am saying to you.  If you get one, don't give up on it right off the bat.  Stick with it and you'll probably love it.  I've had mine over a year now and would buy a new one if it broke in a heart beat.

Good luck with your choice.

Slab is right about the Android box. They work great. If your OK using a computer I suggest downloading Kodi and trying it on the computer first. Kodi isn't the only platform used with an Android box, but it's one of the best and most used. Learning on your computer how to use Kodi on your computer first will make it much easier and help you decide if it's for you or not and it's FREE. This will also help you decide if you have enough internet to handle a box. The great thing about Kodi is you have YouTube with tons of helpful videos to help you along. You don't have to do this. I'm just making a suggestion. Android box's can come with all the programs pre-installed and will include Kodi, but it never hurts to learn and you might even have fun doing it on the computer first and see if you like it.

To start.. Watch some video's. www.youtube.com/watch

After your up and running, get Exodus. Watch here. www.youtube.com/watch

For those that wonder what free stations you can get on an outdoor antenna. Try this little on-line utility. Just fill in your address and the approximate height of the antenna and see what you get. www.tvfool.com/index.php
