Brake Rotor/Pad Measurement for Certification?

So my boy is selling his 2003 Honda Civic SI Coupe and we were wondering what the thickness of the rotors and pad material needs to be to pass a certification these days.

Is there some data base I can look up to get the required thickness for this car to pass?

Is it a formula based on the original thickness?

Hell for a sunshine guy like you.. why piss around with all that measuring and risk losing the sale .. for $100 bucks you can replace replace pads and rotors on one of them.do it right and don't be so cheap..smile

you can look it up on rock auto .748- front min ..... .315 rear min.. they will give you the thickness of the new pad but i would think it should still have a chamfer and wear bar.if they are half ass rotors they are normally marked with a min.

I agree with Chuck 100% on this. Just go new.

Rotors these days are cheaper than turning them in most cases. (Not 4x4 front sometimes etc)

These days, it seems parts are made to replace, I'll give you an example.

I ordered 4 Rotors for my '73 Vette. They were BRAND NEW and large under already. Had another quad sent in and they too were crazy out. I ended up just 'smoothing' the originals and I was still within.

Some of the NEW ones on round 2, were already 'under' when they got here. That is sad.

Absolutely do not replace parts that are still good.

Changing rotors and pads is not "doing it right" if they are still in good shape.

Yes I still have it. Been stashed for 20 years I'd guess. It was originally Yella. I hate Yella. When I bought it, it was some kind of Super-gross powder blue, with Murals all over it. Seriously, this thing had a huge Unicorn on the entire hood and more pics of stuff all over it, and to top that off, crazy pin-stripes everywhere. When I bought it, it was hidden fast in a buddies shop.

Think it had about 50K miles on it and now has about 80 'ish? Original Engine and 4 speed, roof, brake rotors (ha) etc etc.

i would say he is between a rock and a hard spot on it. if they are anywhere close to borderline i would replace them.
a new set could portray he is good for his word on the condition of the rest of the car
a good used set could portray he is a good caretaker
a borderline set might portray what else is iffy.
the last thing you want is his mechanic saying they don't pass or yes they pass but just barely/maybe.
- measure them up and make the call. my guess is how much for the car and the overall condition of it.

There are over 100 2003 civics on kijiji under $2000. the price of new brakes and a safety could add up to 30% of what its worth. You get what you pay for so if they pass they pass.

You're right again Slim, do you EVER get tired of being right all the time? wink

And thank you Shagg and Pugsy for your thoughtful input.

I'm just trying to teach my son, who was laid-off last Friday just before Christmas, how the MTO and certifications work. Every young person needs to learn about doing things for themselves including vehicle maintenance so they don't get ripped off by unscrupulous garages. This is an exercise in teaching him about knowing his car and understanding how parts wear and the pass fail criteria the MTO follows to certify a car. I'm also trying to teach my son to think for himself

Enjoy!biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Well your op was rather vague.. My belief is if your asking, I was thinking you had a problem and you were considering turning the rotors .. and using the used pads again..  You were not very specific.. Based on your explanation of the situation.. That was what I replied to.. I can't tell you over the years how many cheap dicks try everything they can to stiff somebody on a used car.. I am not a real believer in buyer beware.. There are a lot of people out there that have little or no conscience.. I would not want my kid to buy a POS from somebody trying to hide something cause they are too cheap to fix it right..  Just sayn..smile

good luck with that ron, thinking for himself, i went through that 20 plus yrs ago. the son, soon to be 49, caught on to it fairly easy and still upholds that virtue but the daughter, soon to be 40, had turned into a work in progress. but don't give up on it, she has shown some signs of improvement in the last 4-5 or 6 yrs.

Had a look today, all parts still within spec, lights work no codes or dash lights on.
We'll just have to see what they find in the certification.
