I bought a spool of copper #2 AWG booster cable wire at an auction the other day and I was wondering if there's a "rule of thumb" for the length of cable based on the wire gauge?
I did the same thing actually what I wanted is a set of cables that I could boost with from parking behind it has worked very well for the last 30 years
And if you get in a tight spot, you can use a short cable for the ground, from chassis to chassis. That way you have use of the other two, for the positives. At one time I've even gone bumper to bumper for the ground - steel only of course.

No matter how long you make them, They will be 2 inches too short when you need them most....
Seriously #2 gauge will boost most anything you will ever see short of a tractor trailer even if 25 Ft long.
X2
i have a couple of pair, 1 at the shop for the trucks and 1 here at the house for what ever won't start. both are 20ft. once you make them up you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. lol.
mike's on the money with no matter what length there will be times they are short. lol
