What Exactly Is A Rat Rod And Where Did It All Begin?

http://www.rodauthority.com/features/car-features/what-exactly-is-a-rat-rod-and-where-did-it-all-begin/

The hot rods that are built in this particular fashion are commonly known for being highly exaggerated versions of 1950’s style Jaloply hot rods. By highly exaggerated jalopies, we mean cars that are built to look poorly done on purpose, usually thrown together from old junk parts, and are usually poorly constructed as well as being built with little regard for safety. Ask the average gearhead what a “rat rod” is and they will tell you it is a pile of junk on wheels.

The definition above is pretty accurate however the 32 Ford is not a 'rat rod' even though the owner calls it one and claims to have invented the word. The car is currently painted up as a 'easter egg' and is butt ugly. Just because a car is still in primer it isn't automatically a 'rat rod'. I would call this 32 'traditional' as it resembles the type of hot rod built in the 40's; 50's and early 60's. The shoebox isn't really a 'rat rod' either but its close. It is a custom ,extremely lowered L.A. style with 'flamethrowers' none of which technically make it a 'rat rod' but I understand how it could get that label. Just my opinion.
