I have a chrome shift lever for a late 1960's 4 speed Ford (Mustang?) but I can't tell if it's a 1968 or not and it doesn't have any part number or markings on it. My shift lever has slots for the reverse lockout (should look like a disc below the shift knob if it's a '68) in a vertical position to the shaft (i.e. top and bottom of the lever). Most others on the internet seem to have slots that are on the sides of the lever to house a "T" handle below where the shift knob screws on. The problem is I can't find an image on the internet of a 1968 shift level with the reverse lockout disc removed to confirm if the slots are in the vertical of horizontal position!
I can provide pictures for those who can't picture this explanation in their head.
It was in the box of 1968 Shelby GT500KR parts I picked up but I'd like to confirm what model of car it's for.
Apparently prices skyrocket if you can confirm parts are actually for a Shelby!
I have a friend who is fairly knowledgeable, I'm helping him put together a 69 Mustang. If it's Ford original it may be worth something. Most got replaced with Hurst parts. Originals were junk, now rare.
Got pics?
a friend at work is a serious mustang nut. if you have pics I can show him and ask him if he happens to know. or he can ask someone for you. He's part of all the mustang clubs.
Not sure if I am on the same page as you. I'm no authority on it. I don't think factory shifters had reverse lock out back then.
TMJ
i am with you on not being an authority but i think i recall there being 2 little fingers under the shift knob that you pulled to put it into reverse much like the chevs had. my 64 galaxie had the fingers back in the day but how far up the pole they went in years i don't know. that set-up would be more or less a lock out until the were pulled. maybe till ford went top loader, ??

The first 2 pictures are my shifter with the slots that are vertical (or on the top) and the 3rd picture is the complete unit from Scott Drake sold through Summit. In the 3rd picture you can see the disc that serves as the reverse lockout mechanism. I believe there's a pin that goes vertically through the reverse lockout disc to secure it to the shift lever but I can't find a definitive answer to this.
The "T" under the shift knob threads in the pictures below is the reverse lockout mechanism for this style of shifter and the slot is horizontal or on the sides, depending on how you want to describe it.
I believe (and hope) the 1968 4 Speed shift lever is a one year only unit or possibly a Shelby only!
1968 Shelby's had a bunch of unique parts to only that year so they're hard to find and if you do they're expensive.

it doesn't look to be shelby specific though, https://www.google.ca/search?q=1968+ford+gt+mustang+pics&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj-i5PD5bbPAhVBNiYKHan1DlkQsAQIHQ&biw=1600&bih=789#imgrc=QVbHnZtjiz6XlM%3A
