This is your call, but in talking to asphalt guys that do paving for a living, sealer is a waste of money. The only thing it does is make your driveway black. It will seal the asphalt and not allow it to breath, that's not good. If it was beneficial they would put it on the roads as well. I have no proof one way or the other, just info from the source.
My opinion is once you do apply it you had better be prepared to do it every year because it will look worse next year than it does before you apply it the first time.
I guess I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the existence of a decent sealer ......40 years ago when I lived in Kitchener , I had an asphalt driveway and , as Slab has mentioned , it needed redoing often . I tried the shiny stuff the first time and the flat stuff the second time . Both were crap . I vowed that the next house would have a cement drive in spite of the extra cost , and I did just that .
