Need to buy a good used car.

What in your driving experiences has given you the best value?

Honda and Toyota are the top names coming from my wife.

Listen to your wife .....smile

tough to beat either of those choices if your looking for quality, reliability, I worked for Honda for 15 years, and Driven them for 35 years and still drive an Acura MDX. Built in Ont. They are not perfect and they also need maintenance like any other vehicle.. But they are well built,  reliable , handle well, comfortable to drive.. And I like them and will buy another one.. smile

Depending on how tall you are you might want to drive an Escape for a while before purchasing. The one I inherited catches me just under the shoulder blades and is uncomfortable as hell

The saying " Happy wife , happy life " is a good one you should abide by . ......take your wife out and peruse the various used Hondas and Toyotas . You will pay a premium for these cars compared to other similar ones but your wife will be driving it , not you , and what makes her comfortable is the key . When I was in the car business I saw far too many men picking out what THEY liked for their wife / girl friend to drive . Bad move . If something should happen to go wrong down the road , you don't want to be the bad guy .

Took my wife out shopping for a car for her. I had imagined all sorts of cars that a woman might like but much to my surprise she came home with a Grand Cherokee. It's a diesel and is averaging for the past year 8L/100km. Runs great and I like that it is substantial enough to protect her in the event. Last week I took my daughter in her early twenties car shopping. I kept steering towards the sporty girly cars, she came home with a real nice Cruze. They have also been highly praised. I still like my F250 Diesel.

Probably most of us here live on a much smaller budget than you Warren.. I know I do. I could not even look at a Grand Cherokee Diesel.. way over my pay scale.. I am living on a meagre Government pension That I paid into for many years.. But it appears that fruit cake tru-doh is spending all our money on off shore persons so I don't expect to see a raise in the near future.. I am not complaining, just making a statement. My budget for a good used car would be in the under 10 range...smile and the closer to 5 the better ..

Like others say, her car, her choice. I think there are good and bad in all brands. Might even consider renting one for the weekend. I find a 10 min. test drive to short to be of real value for the most part.

I just bought an 2017 escape as a daily driver and love it. it has all the lane assist, blind spot notification thingys,  wave your foot to open the hatch....had an Equinox before this and although I find the escape a bit smaller, driving is much more comfortable.

^^ Driven over 40 years, and we finally become proud Toyota owners, in the last year:

1) wife has a 2008 RAV4 Limited, v6, 4x4, 5sp auto, leather, moon roof, heated seats & wipers / best family vehicle, we ever owned / a tank in snow

2) Larry now has a mint 2000 4Runner SR5, v6, 4x4 loaded & currently with 131,000 Km / truck frame construction & 5,200 lb. tow capacity

3) son has a new 2015 Lexus RX350, v6, AWD / very impressive SUV

Found the RAV4 on Kijiji London, a Doctors vehicle with 89,000 Km / was still like new, and purchased for 33% cost of brand new...Great Value.

- could drive it for 4 more years, and it still would have very good resale value / probably only loose $1,000/year depreciation once sold

- only 2006-2012 with the external spare tire, have the v6-269HP...its peppy like a muscle car / with all the comforts

The used car lots are full of Chrysler/GM/Ford, for good reason / used ones typically don't hold their value good.

....many new Big3 models worth 50%, after 2 years / and approx. 30%, after 4 short years or less

Just sold sons used 2008 Nissan Rogue, 4cyl, FWD SUV - so after Japan brand ownership.

...got 54% of what he paid (owned 4 years used) / or 30% of new, after 8 trouble free years

BEST VALUE to me - is used vehicle capable of being a high miler, without being a money pit (>> repairs/$$) and still offer an above average ROI, upon sale.

- wife's next vehicle will be sons used Lexus or a newer v6 Toyota Highlander

^^ Have a look, I got 2 reliable +/-$5,000 examples, for you / Florida Jeep Cherokee is getting safety check pass, this morning:

My wife had a 1999 Honda Accord for a number of years.Very reliable car.

You looking for a Car or Sport Ute?

I'm with Chuck on the Acura MDX, I have a 2009 and it has been rock solid.
