Here’s a link  the new inspection standards.  Ride height will only matter on vehicles with air suspension.   The new standards will NOT fail a vehicle for just any warning light on the dash, which is being reported in some media releases.  Some warning lights will definitely fail a vehicle (air bags, turn signal lamps, high beam lamp, ABS lamp, etc.) but not all lamps.  For example, a “check engine” lamp will NOT fail a vehicle, nor will warning lamps for low washer fluid, low fuel, etc.  Not much for “modified” vehicles, although MTO is considering a separate standard for such vehicles – let’s hope not!

Steve, the last time I discussed this with MTO they weren't sure they were even going to do it. The new standards are a big enough mess and I doubt they would have any better success with "modified" stuff. If they do, they agreed to consider some input from experienced car builders and I have a list of some volunteers, but I really hope they’re not necessary. I don’t think there are any “car” people involved on the MTO side but there’s lots of engineers, and that’s really scary from my experience. I’m keeping my ears open.

Went to the meeting, Bob Lickers from MTO presented it. Gave a brief over view of the new guide lines. The link time traveler has posted is correct. It's online, everyone can see it.
MTO is trying to be more transparent. I talked to Bob after the meeting, he is a decent guy. Unless you have a truck and your wheels fall off, then look out.
It's expected to take about .3 hours more. Probably expect another half an hour to the bill.
I think it will be very good for the consumer, most measurements and observations will be recorded on paper and the owner will get a copy.
Brake, tires, fuel level, lights on dash, leaks if any etc. All recorded.
MTO has been flooded with calls and emails about raised/lowered vehicles. They will pass safety if done correctly. IE steering and suspension must work properly , not bind , jam, allow travel.
Window tint, no more than 70%. Every shop will be buying a meter. No aftermarket tint or lettering etc on the windshield.
They have talked about inspections for modified vehicles but have no plans to produce any thing right now.
I asked him specifically about if someone takes out an I beam and replaces it with a Mustang II type suspension. He said it must work right, suspension travel ok. Steering gear secure etc. Never said
than you couldn't weld in any new stuff.
If you read the body work part it will say that you can't patch holes bigger than so much. What it means then is you will be replacing a floor pan. Just expect to do it right. Cut out and MIG welded in and seam sealed etc.
There is lots more, just down load it and read it.
I'm glad I went, I'm glad the new guide lines are posted for everyone to see.

These new regulations have been in the works for 3 years. The proposed new rules have been posted on line for at least 9 months prior to approval. Any one could have commented on them before they were enacted.

I couldn't agree more Mike.. These changes are long over due on SRS and ABS .. Those safety features have been on our vehicles for over 15 years. They are just catching up to the technology.. Most of us  wouldn't Let our children drive a car now  with no seatbelts as our daily driver with our family that didn't have these proven safety features. I know we all hated them during there infamy but they are proven to save lives and damage..I believe they should be required to work properly..Our trade has been beaten up for trying to do the right thing for many years..everybody wants cheap, cheap..I really don't see the boogie man in any of the updates they are just catching up to 20 year old technology I believe we all have a responsibility to drive safe vehicles.. I know when we build our rods, we do it right and we notice real quick those that don't...I really don't think there is conspiracy to hunt down us hot-rodders .. I don't feel threatened ,I still do all the same things I always did.. including making sure I have good brakes , Steering, tires, lights, But that is a place where we can design and create our own personal vision of what we can build with the money and skill we can afford.. Like each other  non of us look the same or have the same vision.. safety is not a vision it's common sense...

My son in law is licensed. He went to a "seminar" last night that was supposed to bring mechanics up to speed on the new requirements. When I asked him how it went, he answered " very vague ", not at all well put together. He said after asking a couple questions regarding modified vehicles that he received no clear answer, that it sounded like the guy hosting the info session had no clue. Gee, what a surprise. As usual it'll fall on the shop or the Mechanic.

 I went to the same seminar. Same speaker doing all of them. Did he really expect to go over the whole 92 page manual in detail? With every variation there could possibly be? In 2 hours?

How could a man give a specific answer on a specific modified car that he has never seen?

If he is a licensed mechanic he is supposed to have enough knowledge and understanding of what is good and bad. Licensed carpenters need to know how many nails to put in a house so it doesn't fall down. Does he ask an inspector for every house he builds how many nails he needs?

The same people who say "I don't want to do this any more, it's too much responsibility" are really telling the government to do everything for them.  Nobody seems happy when the government tells them what to do.

 

Maybe just a little left of topic.. I was having a discussion with a guy to-day and we were talking about renewing our trade certificates  "MVM" and we were wondering if you other trades have to go through this every year .. I hate having to give them 180 bucks every year .. It just a tax rip-off .. To the best of my knowledge they have done nothing to enhance our trade.. I have never heard a word or ever seen or talked to anybody in in this area that has either..seen any representation except when they send the renewal invoice with a envelope full of advertising that somebody is getting a kick back from..With the amount of money they steal from us they be should sponsoring some upgrading courses at the local college to help us keep up to date on all the new technology .. Training for independent's is hard to find ..that is the least they can do for the amount of cash they are stealing from us..

I was told it was for the trades that only require renewal. I am red seal tool and die maker and my licence is good for life, just the new tradesmen/women as of 2012 have to have renewals, before that we are grandfathered in.
so I was told, I don't know needs more research
