Trying to get this truck done and gone, but I hit a wall and hoping somebody has dealt with the left front seal on these before.

It was a horror just getting the old one out. The seals have 'teeth' that line up with the inner bearing retainer.

Now, the old seal was flush with the transfer case housing and not lob-sided. Every one of the 20 or so 'teeth' on it were crushed flat except one !

I'm not seeing any locator hole where that one tooth should go just to line this up properly before I pound the heck out of it.

Think I broke Google looking for this.

Anybody ?

Nope, no recess at all. Pulled/unscrewed the bearing retainer out to confirm.

It's gotta be a beat the seal in thing. Retainer has 12 slots, bearing has 14 teeth.

.........or were you kidding ??

Here's an idea; remove 2 teeth and align. Maybe it was a 'press in' at the assembly plant.

It seems as those teeth curl around and flatten against the retainer as it's driven in.
I would imagine it keeps the bearing from walking back and forth.
Pound it in and start driving.

Mission accomplished.

There's no rhyme or reason for all the teethies on the seal to not match the retainer slots.

The old seal was factory and was identical to my replacement. The only thing I could mention is that the mark on the housing and the mark on the retainer lined up fine when tapping the retainer back in.

I tried every slot on the retainer, turning the seal one toof at a time and I always ended up with 1 or 2 of the teefs that were not going to squash down.

New seal seated just fine.

Just FYI guys, cause many Chev/GMC 4x4 including Tahoe etc are apparently the same deal on the left.

Hope I saved somebody some extreme frustration.

Ha ! Hair, might have turned a bit whiter was the worst effect. I don't throw the towel in ever.

I'm too old school to give up after breaking Google a few times. I was surprised I couldn't find anything about it though.

No, I'm not pulling the seal back out to see what it did ! biggrin

Thanks guys for the help and suggestions just the same.
