we got some serious rain fall in this end of the province. it came down hard over night and when the sun came up this is/was my view out back, there is a reasonable size creek back there but it isn't flowing. this is the second time in 2 yrs this has happened when it shouldn't be at this time of year. it's a combination of rain and hi-temp not helping.

this happens somewhat similar every spring but the creek is flowing like crazy, this morning it ain't. scary part is this should be happening in mid march and the creek should be flowing hard.

the thin white line running about 1/2 way down the pic's has the creek right in front of it with no sign of movement.

OOHHh!!

That does not look good.. It is supposed to get to freezing around lunch maybe at least the rain is stopping so it hopefully won't come up any more.. The ground is still froze so it's hard for it soak up all the water.. We have the same here the Thames and some of the tributary's and drainage ditches are flooded.. I am lucky, for rain as my place is on a hill so everything runs away, not so lucky with snow as everything seems to blow up the damn hill.. Keep yer rubbers close to the door Rick.. smile

Live flooding in St.Marys this morning.. that old Thames is just rocking..

[video=]

click that sucker on full screen you can almost feel like your caught in the water in a canoe..I remember being a young fella and canoeing the Maitland river when it empties into the lake at Goderich Gosh we were dumb.. with all the ice flow, and chunks it's wonder we didn't get killed.. We used to have about 25 of us that worked at the Ford plant and we used to canoe that river every spring..We lost a couple canoes but never got hurt.. talk about no brains.. it would scare the b-jeepers out of me to-day..

St Marys, Ontario is getting hammered right now as water levels  continue to rise.

This is what that Thames river in St.Marys would look like on a nice summer day..

Wow, that looks bad. Water running at that speed can do a lot of damage, I hope those bridges are well anchored. Good luck to all.

My Dad's family settled that area when they emigrated from Ireland. I remember him telling me stories of flooding in his childhood, once, due to a flooded creek between their farm and the side-road they had to ferry back and forth by rowboat to get to school. Beat's walking 6 miles uphill both ways through 4 feet of snow I guess......

We keep developing farmland, paving and covering everything with impermeable surfaces that force run-off elsewhere then we wonder why we get flooded.

there is an old adage, what a difference a day makes, and it is playing out here.

IMG_1345.JPGIMG_1346.JPG

the first pics are a bit of an illusion as there is probably about a 10ft sloping incline to get to house level from where the water line is. the point of this is that it happened over night not gradually. i bought this place 19yrs ago from an estate sale and the first spring here the creek started rising and rising but maybe over a week or so to the same level. it stayed for close to another week that way with the creek just roaring past. i remember the first couple of years i was asking myself what the hell have i got into here but then it turned into, it is what it is every spring. when i put the addition on the old stone house 5-6yrs ago and they had the laser stuff going for leveling i took a shot from the creek to the house and it was about 14ft difference. i figured if i get flooded belleville will be screwed as the creek dumps into the moira river about 2mi east of me and runs through downtown belleville after it floods out foxboro, again.

the point of this is that it happened overnight for the second time now in 2yrs. the first time was just after the creek had just about got back to normal again in the spring and the rain came. i said to myself, self if this volume of rain came while the creek was doing it's normal spring thing about a week earlier it could get interesting around here, self. later that year it turned into a serious drought around here. the times are a changing guys.

over the yrs i have had some strange stuff go past from the neighbors yards upstream. lol

Roads are getting washed out all over my area. This is west of Aylmer, where a tributary meets the Catfish Creek

yea i went checking down stream to see whats up but everywhere was the same to the river. there is enough frost this year that i would of took the backhoe and opened it up if there was a problem somewhere. with the temps they are saying for next week it would be a c.i.l. job though. when i got here yrs ago the beavers had a dam just west of the house flooding out a wood lot and a field. a buddy says lets blow it up using a propane tank. i had heard about that but never done it so okay. found a outdated tank and had to talk the station into just putting a little in it explaining what for and him having a turban on it took some splaing, lol put the tank against the dam and we stood back behind a big tree using a .270 and he pulled the trigger. man that was funny, lol. all we heard was woosh-woosh-woosh and the tank going down the creek with a big hole in it. lmfo  i said, i thought you had done this before and he says no but i had heard about it. man that was funny, we probably looked like a pair of elmer fudd's standing behind that tree.

image003.jpgended up getting a trapper in and he cleaned up the beavers and the coons that were everywhere. he has taken 3 or 4 fishers over the yrs also.

Sure glad i'm on high ground. The creek about 1.000 ft. away from me and down a small hill has flooded 40 acres of pasture land.
