Phone numbers and my privacy OR Just getting set in my ways??

Have you ever noticed how businesses don't refer to you by your name.
You go to Princess Auto the first thing the cashier ask is "phone number please". You take something back to TSC you have to have a phone number.
About 10 years ago when I had a job I applied for a credit card. I wanted a card with a small limit, something I could use online for my/our hobby.
They (I think it was VISA) wouldn't give me a card. I called to see why. They said I had not completely filled out the application. The nice lady said I didn't put down a phone number. I said why would you need a phone number. She said incase there is a problem with the card we can call you.
I said if there is a problem with the card cancel it and I'll call you next time I try to use it. I never did get the card..
The other day I thought my OLD AUTO'S is late. Well I guess I didn't renew it. Yes My fault!!
I called OLD AUTO'S to renew ,, I had to give my name,, address because their system dumps all your info when your subscription expires. That's OK I understand that.
The next question was for my phone number. I said WHY. She said if you pay by credit card (over the phone) they need a phone number incase there is a problem with the card.. So after 29 years I no longer get OLD AUTO"S.
Am I being strange?? Hell yeah,,, but the phone won't be ringing at supper time..

I think retail, etc like the phone number as it is easier to get the correct person. They may have a couple family members with the same initial and lets face it it's easier to punch in 10 digits then to try and spell out names seeing as we have such a growing culture. Names are hard to pronounce correctly never mind spelling them. We got rid of our landline and the wife and I both have a cell phone now. Much less annoying supper time calls and any that do slip by I don't answer and then block the number.

I was curious about reverse mortgages. I filled out the form on the compooter and put my home phone number in. I got a call as I was doing some interior painting. I told them to call the next day. I unplugged the phone.
Yesterday, on my cell phone I see a message from the same company. How did they get my cell phone number?

More then likely a reverse look up . You called them on a land line  so they have your name and address. . Its a bit harder to cross a cell For free but if its not your dime its pretty simple.
