Now you can get cheap US parts and not have to pay the exchange rate on the money.

Is that going to be long enough for you to clean out everything in your shop?
How many dumpsters will be required, may get a bulk rate.

Homes are about $100,000-$200,000, $1000-$1500 monthly to rent, trailers are $20,000 and it's right around the corner from the, Walmart, Walgreens, Franklin County Jail, Louisburg College for the kids and lots of churches! Heat will cost less, property taxes are probably less, gas is definitely cheaper, NASCAR (not sure if that's good or bad?), electricity costs less, you can write off the interest on your mortgage against you're income tax which is a 5.75% flat rate. You'll need a green card but your company can speed that up by sponsoring you. You'll need yearly vehicle inspections. Booze is cheaper, NC has the Death Penalty, no universal health care, they talk weird, no more Winn or Trudeau! Trump WON in North Carolina! U.S. Census estimated that the racial distribution of North Carolina's population was 71.2% White American, 22.1% African American, 1.6% American Indian, 2.8% Asian, and 9.1% Hispanic or Latino.

Some tough choices there Rob, especially on where you want your kids to grow up, hope it's worth the money...

As with most things in life, time will tell if our decisions turn out positive or not so positive because the future is not ours to control.
With politics in the US changing as of tomorrow, foreign government stability constantly changing, interest rates supposedly on the rise, OPEC countries getting back in sync cutting output to force gas prices up, no one can say what next year will be like.

i would say it is big alright. like tmj i would be asking about insurance of employment also and like him you are at the age i would sign up, but they would be signing something also that you mutually agree to. you should eventually come home on your terms not theirs and if you do come home on their terms you will have a cheque in your pocket and a smile for a job well done.

i will hitch a ride with chris from brighton down for the pre-sale also. lol

How about getting your 3rd or even your 2nd Class Stationary Engineers ticket?
That's what I was when I worked at GM Oshawa, the higher the class the more money you got.

ya I might do that, I have spoke with the tssa inspector who is a first class and he said its just more tests you write, Ill get the 4th class to start then move up if I don't go south.  even a 4th class ticket is like 60000 a year to babysit a boiler.

looks like I will be moving, made my first trip to the factory in louisberg, seems they need me more then they can imagine. making a few more trips as they want to be sure I want to do this and that I work out.  in any event I don't have to move as I can get another job but it is a nice place and they have been pretty good to me.  its like summer there right now, lots of trailers and shacky shacks, I think I will fit in rather nicely.

Rob: I would go for it in a heartbeat,  I would just love that opportunity.. to get into the US .. For car guys there is just a ton of Cars and trucks still all around that area..I think once you get there for a year you will not want to come back. With the internet you can still keep in touch with us and send some pictures of your shop and how your making out.. We are not that far away by internet.. I hope you take it and it works out well for. If you don't take this opportunity you will regret it I believe.. Will you have same boss. or will you have a complete new set of management.. boss's? That would be my concern. obviously  you are liked by your present employer as they asked you to come there. I am surprised you were able to get a green card .. With all the employment situation right Now. Lot's of Americans are looking for jobs..They are cutting back on Green cards until they have their own people employed.. I wish you good luck, go for it and keep us in the loop.

I know if I was to do it all again, looking back now I would have tried moving south. Back when I was a car hauler going south, I just loved going to some of those small little towns. Clean and tidy and very well kept with friendly people and the most patriotic you could ever meet. Having said that, I also hated the big cities, but I feel that way here as well.

they are getting me a work visa, eventually a green card, of course I will be part of this forum still.  as for my employer its one big company with factories around the world so same employer just a different local. I will have new bosses so to speak  but in my current situation im the manager of my department, not much should change as im being sent there to shake it up and make the place work, it doesn't work very well at the moment.

I wish you the best of luck Rob.. Me I love the US .. I have never had a bad experience there. I have been to NC lots of times. Nice country all through there. and cars and trucks galore lot's of stuff for car guys.. You can bring some stuff back here to sell every time you come back for a visit.. I am too damn old for moving now .. But when I was 40 I would have moved in a heartbeat.. Good luck I think you will be a little lonesome maybe for a couple months and you will no doubt miss being here That will pass quickly with the  summer coming up. I think you will really like it.. Especially if it's a small town.. Good luck any date you are moving yet..

All the best Rob, moving to NC. - and the USA doesn't have a 76 cent dollar...win-win being paid in American funds.

I had a co-worker friend that moved up the ranks relatively fast, at Timken Bearings.
- he started in St. Thomas, ON plant
- moved to corporate in Canton, OH.
- and finally Plant Manager in NS or SC
The weather is to die for, major part of the year / he never regretted the move (20 years ago), for a minute.

I was on a Corporate project one summer and got to tour the US plants.
- the head chemist was on the team, and he knew of all the awesome restaurants...through his world travels
One night an hour from the NC/SC boarder, we drove down miles of dirt road / ending up at a private gold coarse, for supper.
- I ordered "cat fish"...as I never had it before
- turned out to be a Top10 meal of my lifetime
I asked the server, how the meal was prepared?
- fillet cast iron pan fried with brown sugar, red whine & sliced almonds
Enjoy your family adventure.

Best of luck to you Rob , I've friends in Alabama that have never regretted the move ; accessibility to cars , parts and goodies never ceases to amaze me . To see how badly we are getting stiffed on parts alone almost makes to move possible . I'm sure you'll get something else to build and we'll look forward to seeing it

Before I picked up and left .Id be after at least a 5 year contract with similar health care and benefits as you have now. Have a local labour lawyer from that state look it over as the laws are different from state to state. Ive seen too many people thrown under the bus to trust any corporation.

too bad rob, it would of been a good experience for a time. in hindsight it might just be the right decision for this time frame with trump and his b/s over nafta. besides sh!t usually happens for a reason.
